B.Tech First Year Exams of JNTU CancelledJul 01, 2002: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has announced the cancellation of all first year B.Tech examinations scheduled to be held on Monday. The date for conducting the examinations would be announced later. The decision was taken following reports of question paper leakage. The issue was referred to the CB-CID and a decision on the examinations, which were already conducted, would be made after the investigating agency gives its report, the JNTU vice-chancellor, Y Venkatram Reddy said. Left students unions plan stir over shortage of textbooksJul 02, 2002: Hyderabad, June 1: Several Left democratic student unions have come together to launch an agitation against shortage of textbooks, low mess charges for hostel students and shortage of English teachers in schools. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, leaders AISF (All India Students Federation), SFI (Students Federation of India), PDSU (Progressive Democratic Students Union), AIDSO (All India Democratic Students Organisation ) and PDSO (Progressive Democratic Students Organisation) said that rallies and dharnas would be held on July 10 in support of their demands. Inter classes from July 5Jul 03, 2002: Hyderabad: The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) on Tuesday stated that the first phase of admissions for the Intermediate first year was completed and the principals were asked to start classes from July 5. According to a press release, the BIE also announced the second phase of admission schedule for the candidates who appeared for SSC advance supplementary exams, CBSE, ICSE and for the newly permitted junior colleges. The admissions should be completed by July 25. Technical panel cuts State seatsJul 03, 2002: Hyderabad: The All India Council for Technical Education has ordered reduction of 470 MCA and 190 MBA seats for 2002-2003 in the existing colleges of the State due to inadequate infrastructure and untrained facility. Though there was an increase in the number of seats by 4,920, the actual increase was only 3,260 (both MCA and MBA combined) due to a four % cut in the existing seats. Recently, the AICTE also had reduced the number of seats in a couple of engineering colleges which lacked facilities in the State.
Govt mulls 25 % weightage for Intermediate marksJul 04, 2002: Hyderabad: In a move aimed at easing the burden on students taking the Intermediate and Eamcet examinations, the government is considering giving 25 % weightage for marks obtained in Intermediate while allotting seats in medical and engineering colleges from the next academic year. At present these seats are awarded on the basis of the rank secured by students in theEngineering Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (Eamcet) examination. JNTU to hold re-exam of leaked paperJul 05, 2002: Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technology University (JNTU) will conduct a re-examination on July 27 of the `semiconductor devices and circuits’, which was reported to have been leaked before the examination was conducted on June 28. The dates ofboth the re-examination as well as the postponed test on `CN data structures’ have been finalised, JNTU vice-chancellor Prof Y Venkarami Reddy told The Times of India on Thursday. The cancelled examination will be held on July 27, and the latter one on July 29, he said. UGC scheme for dual degreesJul 05, 2002: New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has come up with the novel idea of offering dual degrees to technical education students if they are willing to spend a few more months in the campus. The UGS, working with a mandate to change the 50 year-old system, has set up a study group of outside experts to develop the scheme. The group recently met to discuss the pros and cons. UGC acting chairperson Prof Arun Nigaveker said `It is still at a preliminary stage. But the idea was mooted because of the changing job scene and to provide students more opportunities. D.Ed exams from July 22Jul 06, 2002: Hyderabad: The first year public examinations of the diploma in education for regular candidates of the D.Ed. course 2001-2003 and failed candidates of earlier batches will be conducted from July 22 to 26 from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. in all district institutes of education and training. The candidates are directed to collect their hall tickets and identification certificates from the principals of the respective DIETs well in advance. Students protest reservation policyJul 06, 2002: Hyderabad: Students from various colleges in the twin cities expressed their resentment against increasing inequalities in society and child marriages. They maintained that their future would be at stake if the reservation policy was continued. About 200 students from various colleges in the twin cities participated in the open forum hosted for college students by the AP Women’s Commission at Buddha Bhavan here on Friday. Inaugurating the open forum, Haripriya Rangarajan, the first lady of the State, urged the youth to come forward to express their ideas and voice their opinion. 1.44 lakh library books to be digitisedJul 08, 2002: Hyderabad: The state government, in association with the Carnegie Mellon University, has begun an exercise to protect rare books housed at the State and City Central Libraries. As part of the project, which is being coordinated by Prof Raj Reddy of Carnegie Mellon Univeristy, as many as 1.44 lakh books in Telugu, Urdu, Persian, Arabic and English will be digitised and posted on the Internet. Two scanning centres will be established – one at the State Central Library and the other at the City Central Library – for scanning of books.
NSUI calls for boycott of classesJul 08, 2002: Hyderabad: The NSUI has given a call to students in the State to boycott classes on July 10 and participate in dharnas proposed to be held at Collectorates on July 11 to register protest against commercialisation of education. Hitting out at the government for encouraging corporate colleges indiscriminately, the NSUI state president Punnam Prabhakar said as per GO Ms No.12 the government had given corporate colleges a free hand to increase strength in their colleges. 16,266 EAMCET rankers take admissionsJul 09, 2002: Hyderabad: As many as 1,622 students took admissions in the open category of the EAMCET-2002 admissions from among the ranks called on Saturday. According to a status report, candidates from ranks 17,501 to 20,000 were called. A total of 1,968 candidates had registered, including 863 from Hyderabad, 384 from Guntur, 170 from Warangal, 276 from Tirupati and 265 from Visakhapatnam. For admissions, 14,644 seats were filled onJuly 5 and 1,622 on July 6. This brings the total seats filled to 16,266.

Engineering colleges in dire straits, seats go beggingJul 09, 2002: Chennai: Like the year before, thousands of engineering seats may fall vacant this year too, posing problems to the self financing engineering colleges, especially in the districts. After the first phase of admissions are over, the trends reveal that the students prefer for established colleges and the likelihood of thousands of payment seats falling vacant. In the city, seats in both the free and payment categories have been filled in the reputed self-financing engineering colleges like Crescent, SRM, SSN and Sri Venkateswara Engineering College. There are still thousands of free seats available in the majority of the institutions in the districts.
PG medical admission scheduleJul 09, 2002: Hyderabad: The third and final selections to fill the vacancies available for post-graduate medical degree/diploma courses for the year 2001-2002 will be held at the NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada on July 15 and 16. Scholarships through banksJul 10, 2002: Hyderabad: To eliminate scope for bogus claims, the Social Welfare department has started opening bank accounts for the 2.17 lakh odd scholarship holders, so that the amounts can be disbursed directly to students. This would ensure that only genuine students get the benefits while closing the doors for those who try to eat up the funds by floating bogus colleges. The present system is vulnerable since the principals are the drawing and disbursing authorities.

Textbooks ready for distribution: NCERT chiefJul 11, 2002: New Delhi: Facing accusations of delay in publishing textbooks for the new academic year, NCERT chairman JS Rajput today said the textbooks were ready for distribution. The release of text books had got hampered due to court litigation. The books would be distributed within a week of the Supreme Court deciding on the matter. He said `there were certain derogatory portions in previous history textbooks regarding Guru Tegh Bahadur which ought to have been deleted. CBSE to simplify mathsJul 12, 2002: New Delhi: In an effort to reduce stress on students appearing for board examinations, the Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to simplify Mathematics and Physics question papers for Class XII and Science for class X from the current academic year. `The board has observed that sometimes the number of questions in the question paper given during examination causes unwarranted stress in the mind of the learner, often creating an anxiety in their mind whether they would be able to complete their question paper, CBSE said in a circular JNTU, US varsity launch joint course in MBAJul 12, 2002: Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) on Thursday formally launched a joint MBA programme in collaboration with Central Michigan University (CMU), USA. Under the new MBA programme, consisting of four semesters, the students will have to clear initial two semesters in JNTU, while the remaining two semesters will be taught at the Michigan University. Students will have to pay Rs.30,000 per semester in JNTU while the CMU will charge according to its fee structure for the remaining two semesters. DSC results to be out on July 18Jul 13, 2002: Hyderabad: The results of the District Selection Committee (DSC) test held for filling up 36,000 teachers posts all over the State, will be released on July 18. School Education director Man Mohan Singh, while releasing the final key of DSC-2002, said the key has been hosted on www.aponline.gov.in for the benefit of the candidates. Candidates having complaints or grievances have to contact their respective District Educational Officers. Candidates can also apply for recounting, he said. Steps afoot to award grdes to jr.collegesJul 13, 2002: Hyderabad: Based on the infrastructure, quality of faculty and utilisation of financial resources, the Intermediate colleges in the State would be awarded grades from the next academic year. The AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has launched an elaborate exercise to get information from over 1,000 junior colleges. According to C Subba Rao, chairman, APSCHE, the grading system would give a fair chance to students to gauge the quality of education offered by the institution. Counseling for vacant seats in PG coursesJul 15, 2002: Hyderabad: Counseling for the vacant seats in PG courses in the colleges under Osmania University will be held from July 18 to 22. The entrance test for admissions for the PG courses – M.A., M.Sc., M.Com., and M.Sc (IS) - under OU was heldlast month. The first phase of counseling was held from July 3 to 14 to fill up the seats.Candidates who had qualified in the entrance test were admitted in the courses. The second phase of counseling for the unfilled seats will be held from July 18 and those who had passed in the entrance test can appear for the counselling, officials said.(Enadu, city page9) Panel to discuss changes in EAMCET patternJul 15, 2002: Hyderabad: A high level meeting will be held here on July 18 to decide whether to bring changes in the EAMCET pattern or not. Demand for action against culprits in scholarship scamJul 16, 2002: Hyderabad: Members of various Dalit organisations demanded action against the culprits in the scholarship scam in the social welfare department. Mala Mahanadu state president M Venkat Rao, at a pressmeet, said the culprits have misused Rs.18 crore in the name of social welfare scholarships for students. Due to the scam, hundreds of poor students of weaker sections were deprived of financial help for several years. Venkat Rao, along with others, demanded that stringent action against the culprits be taken.(The New Indian Express, city Express, page 3) PDSU opposes closure of colleges for tribal studentsJul 16, 2002: Hyderabad: The Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) flayed the State government for ordering closure of five residential junior colleges for tribals. They also criticised the cancellation of courses like MPC, BPC, CEC and HEC from the syllabus in 27 other colleges in nine districts. PDSU president M Srinivas, at a press conference, said the closure of colleges was ordered on June 19 on the grounds that the enrolment of students in these colleges was very low. Due to closure of five colleges, 2,000 tribal students are likely to lose an academic year, he said. `Education for every TN child by 2010'Jul 17, 2002: Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha launched Rs.1800 crore `Education for all’ programme. Hyderabad: The State Government would soon come out with a G.O. making it mandatory for all the engineering colleges in the State to go in for grading to enable the students to choose their college based on its grade. The decision to grade the engineering colleges was taken in view of the increase in number of colleges and also due to rising criticism over the lack of infrastructure and healthy academic atmosphere in the colleges. Hyderabad: Four persons were arrested by sleuths of the CID in connection with the leakage of B.Tech first year question papers of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University here. According to Additional Director General Of Police (CID), the arrested were identified as Shaik Hussain Sahab, Anantha Chinna Babu (both belonging to Aditya Engineering College), Kolli Bhaskar ( a canteen owner) and Kolli Girish (a B.Sc student). Hyderabad: The last date for submission of applications for admission into MBBS and BDS courses for the academic year 2002-2003 is August 21. The applications will be sold till Aug 19. Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has decided to conduct re-examinations for another four papers of first year B.Tech examinations in addition to the re-examinations scheduled on July 27 and 29. The schedule for the examinations of the four papers is: Mathematics – Aug 3, Applied Physics –Aug 5, Computers and Information Technology –Aug7 and Network (theory) –Aug9. The examinations will be held from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m.
Diploma courses in foreign languagesJul 22, 2002: Hyderabad: Junior, senior and advanced diploma courses are being offered in French, German and Russian for the academic year 2002-2003 by the department of foreign languages, Osmania University. Classes would be held from 7.30 to 10.00 a.m. and from 4.00 to 6.30 p.m. Admission to senior and advanced courses is through entrance test which would be conducted on July 31. Application forms are available from the University Press and the last date for their submission is July 27, says a press release. Placement drive to Inter vocational studentsJul 22, 2002: Hyderabad: The Board of Apprenticeship Training (BAT), southern region, Chennai, is conducting a three-day placement drive in the city (Hyderabad) from July 23. About 40,000 students who have passed Intermediate vocational courses in the last three years, are eligible to attend the placement drive to be held at Vanitha Mahavidyalaya Grounds. Schools with power to get computersJul 22, 2002: Hyderabad: School education secretary I V Subba Rao said computers would be installed in about 1,000 government high schools, including residential schools across the state, which have power supply. The installation of computers and introduction of computer-related courses are the result of a tie-up between the state government and the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT). `This is a five-year programme and the teachers will also be given training in the use ofcomputers’, he said. Adhere to rules, private colleges tell BIEJul 23, 2002: Hyderabad: The Private Junior Colleges Principals’ Association and Private Junior Colleges Managements Association on Monday appealed to the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) to adhere to rules with regard to sanction of additional sections in junior colleges. Associations’ representatives B Sivakumar Reddy, K Siddeshwar, GV Krishna and K Santhi Kishore told newsmen that the BIE had warned all colleges not admit more than the sanctioned number of students. But the corporate colleges, as usual, admitted thousands of students. Now, the efforts are on to reverse board’s orders. They asked the board not to change the earlier orders. OU Engg. College to conduct programme for small unitsJul 23, 2002: Hyderabad: The Entrepreneurship Development Cell of the University College of Engineering, Osmania University, will conduct a job-oriented `Small Industries Management Programme’ of 14 weeks’ duration commencing from the first week of September. The programme is sponsored by the Small Industries Development Bank of India. Graduates in any discipline and technical diploma holders are eligible to apply for the course for which a fee of Rs.4,000 has been fixed. There is no entrance test. The last date for submission of application forms is August 26. Seats available for BA courseJul 23, 2002: Hyderabad: A few seats are available in the BA (English/Telugu medium) under the semester system in the Osmania University College for Women, Koti in city. According to P Pramada Devi, principal, interested candidates could collect the application forms on payment of Rs.120 each. Counselling would be held on July 25 at 10.00 a.m. at the Esra Hall. Students who have registered their names earlier need not apply again, she said. (briefs) Scholarship scam accused arrestedJul 24, 2002: Hyderabad: One of the prime accused in the multi-crore scholarship scam D Shanker Rao was arrested by the central crime station police on Monday. Among the many belongings seized from Shanker Rao, there was a CD. Shanker Rao (48), an accountant with the pay and accounts office, floated bogus colleges and collected crores of rupees by presenting bogus bills for post-matric scholarships. A resident of Kamalapuri Colony, Rao and his colleague Mothiya Naik were helped by officers with the social welfare, tribal welfare and BC welfare departments. The police had already arrested 10 persons in the sensational case. Students demand withdrawal of GO.Jul 24, 2002: Hyderabad: Students at Osmania University boycotted classes on Tues day in protest against the recent government order No.426. The government, through the GO. Had reduced the eligibility age for government jobs from 34 to 28. The academic year for the first and final year students of post-graduate courses commenced on July22. Various students organisations swung into action resenting the order and boycotted the classes on the second day observing it as `Black Day’. The students demanded immediate withdrawal of the GO. Govt revises upper age limit for jobsJul 25, 2002: Hyderabad: The Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu said in the Assembly that the government had decided to increase the upper age limit to 33 years from 28 years in the light of representations made by unemployed youth. Through a recent GO., the government had reduced the upper age limit for government jobs from 34 years to 28 years. There were agitations by students and other organisations protesting the GO. Following this, the government had agreed to partially concede the demand and decided to rise the upper age limit from 28 years to 33 years. State urged not to shift B.Sc (horticulture) courseJul 25, 2002: Hyderabad: Sabita Indra Reddy (Congress) demanded that the government withdraw the proposal to shift B.Sc (horticulture) course of the Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University from Rajendranagar to Aswaraopet in Khammam district. As there are no facilities at Aswaraopet, students would be put to a lot of inconvenience which would lead to closure of the college, she said. Last date for Inter admissions extendedJul 26, 2002: Hyderabad: The last date for admissions into first year Intermediate for the academic year 2002-2003 has been extended to July 31. Aided Junior colleges and composite degree colleges have been permitted to take admissions up to 135 in each section and no admissions should be made beyond the stipulated strength. Principals of junior colleges have beenrequested to furnish admission particulars to the regional inspection officers concerned along with consolidated fee, says a press release. New method to preserve historyJul 26, 2002: New Delhi: Using new techniques of microfilming, experts at the National Archives of India (NAI) say they can preserve invaluable documents for as long as five centuries. Among the precious documents that have already been preserved are notes on the famous Kohinoor diamond and the 16th century Persian translation of Mahabharat. While the NAI has been microfilming thousands of documents since 1950s, the more important ones are now being preserved for longer periods with the help of new techniques. BRAOU extends date for MBA admissionsJul 27, 2002: Hyderabad: The Dr BR Ambedkar Open University has extended the last date for submission of MBA first year admission forms from July 26 to August 17, according to a press release. The admission to MBA is through the common entrance test ICET-2002 based on merit. Fifty % of the seats are reserved for in-service persons (graduates and post-graduates with two years of supervisory, managerial or professional experience). The rest of the seats are for fresh graduates or post-graduates from any recognised university. Intermediate first year supplementary resultsJul 27, 2002: Hyderabad: Girls fared better in lthe Intermediate first year supplementary results announced on Friday. Out of the 3,98,997 candidates, 1,92,499 passed. The overall pass %age is 48.42. While girls secured a pass %age of 50.52, boys secured 46.83 %. Of the 23 districts, Krishna recorded the highest pass %age of 65.22, while Mahabubnagar was the lowest with 29.76 %. Staff crunch govt junior collegesJul 27, 2002: Hyderabad: Of the 660 government junior colleges in the state, more than 200 suffer from chronic staff shortage. The infrastructureis poor, hardly does one come across a well-equipped laboratory or a well-stocked library. Barring one or two government junior colleges, the plight of rest of the institutions is pathetic in districts. According toAP Government College Principals Association president A Rajender Babu, 124 junior colleges started last year are housed at ZP high school complexes. Education festival from Aug 2Jul 29, 2002: Hyderabad: The state government organises Education festival (Chaduvula pandaga) in all the schools across the state from Aug 2 to 11. The school education department has prepared an action plan for the success of the festival. As part of the festival, children of primary classes, will be allowed to write on the blackboards at their will. There will be no restrictions on them during the festival. `This will be a continuous process where officers at various levels will keep a check on every other level. Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has once again postponed the first year engineering examination scheduled on Monday leaving thousands of students in the lurch. The postponed examination on `data ofstructures’ will be conducted on August 11, while another examination scheduled for August 3 remains unchanged. The University has already postponed all the six examinations of the first year following the leakage of question papers at the end of June. JNTU to send question papers through netJul 31, 2002: Education31
Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) is proposing to send the question papers through Internet in future to prevent lapses in the distribution of question papers by the observers and to arrest leakages. The proposed system, according to sources in the university, will eliminate the existing system of printing and sending the papers to the examination centres. The details of the new examination system willbe officially made public after the review committee report on the system is submitted to the JNTU executive council. Teachers threaten to launch agitationJul 31, 2002: Hyderabad: The Joint Council of Teachers Association (AP) has threatened to launch a phase-wise agitation to press its demands. The association has called for picketing of Collectorates on August 24 and that of the Secretariat in September. A Narasimha Reddy, chairman of the association, and others, at a press conference on Tuesday, said instead of fulfilling the promises given to the ICTA, the Government was creating more problems. It was creating rifts between the cadres.
