BRAOU invites research proposals

Aug 01, 2002:

Hyderabad: Research project proposals are invited from persons with Ph.D and experience in research in distance education, information and communication technologies for the newly established `Prof G Ram Reddy Academy of Distance Education’ of Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University.

According to a press release, the areas identified for project proposals are student support services, application of new technologies for development of learning materials, quality assurance, impact studies and system management.

UPSC results

Aug 01, 2002:

Hyderabad: The Union Public Service Commission will declare the results of civil services (preliminary) examinations -2002 on Friday. The results can be accessed on the internet on www.upsc.gov.in from 5.00 pm on Friday. About 1.57 lakh candidates appeared for the examination all over the country.

BC hostels to admit highschool students

Aug 02, 2002:

Hyderabad: The state government has decided to henceforth allow admission of eighth, ninth and SSC students in all the 1,427 BC Welfare Hostels in the State. Earlier, these students were eligible for admission into only 239 special hostels. The decision was taken to prevent the hardship involved in going to far-off places, BC Welfare Minister N Narasimha Rao said on Thursday.

BIE extends date for Intermediate

Aug 02, 2002:

Hyderabad:The last date for admission into the first year of Intermediate course for 2002-2003 has been extended to August 8. In a press release, the Board of Intermediate Examination (BIE) has asked the principals of the junior colleges to process admissions according to this last date. Students admitted over and above the sanctioned strength will not be permitted to appear for first year intermediate examinations, to be held in March 2003, the release said

JNTU goes digital to prevent leaks

Aug 02, 2002:

Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) will introduce Electronic distribution of question papers from November this year to prevent leakages of papers and mass copying.

JNTU vice-chancellor Y Venkatarami Reddy, at a press conference, said experts would prepare a question bank of 200 to 300 questions on each subject. From this question bank, four sets ofquestion papers will be prepared covering the entire syllabus.

The question papers will be encrypted in a compact disc and the CDs will be supplied tothe examination centres three days in advance. The papers will also be made available on the JNTU examination website. The password to open the CDs will be supplied to the authorised persons an hour before the commencement of the examination.

CM launches Chaduvula Panduga

Aug 03, 2002:

Adilabad: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched `Chaduvula pandaga’ programme at the temple town of Basar on Friday. Talking to child labourers in the town, he directed the district collector K Ramakrishna Rao to take steps to prosecute the employers of the child labourers. He also ordered the collector to collect fines from the employers as per the provisions. The fine amounts would be used for the education of the respective child labourer, he said

Malaysia needs English teachers from India

New Delhi: Malaysiais seeking help from the Human Resource Development Ministry for their need for English teachers. Union HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi discussed the proposal and worked out the details ata meeting with Malaysian Minister of Education, Tan Sri Musa Bin Mohamad on Friday. They also needteachers in mathematics and science, Joshi said.

Book exhibition

Rs.200 crore for medical colleges' infrastructure

Aug 05, 2002:

Hyderabad: In order to improve the infrastructure facilities of all teaching medical colleges, the State government has earmarked an outlay of Rs.200 crore, said Anji Reddy, director general of medical sciences.

Anji Reddy, inaugurating the Ninth Annual Conference of AP Neuroscientists Association, said the intake in post graduate courses was increased by 475 seats to promote medical education in the state.

Lauding the development in the fields of neurology and neurosurgery, he said the cure rate has increased as a result of which the mortality rate had decreased.

25 Govt schools to get new premises

Aug 06, 2002:

Hyderabad: The state government has decided to shift 25 government schools to new premises by August 15, says a senior official from education department.

`This is an ongoing process and the programme will be linked to other MCH programmes.’, he said

The state government plans to construct 200 new buildings in the next four years, he adds.

Teachers demand more funds for education

Aug 06, 2002:

Hyderabad: University and college teachers across the country will organise `march to Parliament’ in New Delhi on August 13 to mark the launch of `Save education’ campaign.

B Vijay Kumar, general secretary, All-India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations, said on Monday the agitation was aimed to bring pressure on the Centre to give priority to the education sector while allocating funds.

Vijay Kumar, along with other leaders, stressed on the need for the allocation of more funds to education.

Collector expresses regrets

Kurnool: In a quick damage control exercise in the wake of Monday’s incident, District Collector G Sai Prasad, on Tuesday, sought to clarify that he had nothing against student organisations. He too expressed his regrets for his act of chasing and beating the students.

It may be recalled that Sai Prasad, on Monday, resorted to a virtual lathicharge on schoolchildren demonstrating before the Collectorate seeking redressal of their grievances. The Student organisations all over the state condemned the act of the district collector. Following this, the collector expressed his regrets.

Inter Board caution to students

Aug 07, 2002:

Hyderabad: The state government, on Tuesday, declared the three New Delhi-based institutions – All India Board ofSecondary Education, Board of Adult Education and Training and Central Board of Higher Education – are fake. The government said the certificates awarded by these institutions were not recognised.

The commissioner and secretary of the AP Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) B Kripanandam, in a press release, made it clear that neither the Delhi state government nor the Human Resource Department of Government of India recognised these three institutions.

AICTE to reduce 25 % seats in erring engineering colleges

Aug 08, 2002: Hyderabad: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has ordered reduction of 25 % of seats in 12 Engineering colleges for `lack of performance’.

According to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Vice-Chancellor Y Venkatarami Reddy, the 12 colleges have an intake of 2,200 seats. Of these 2,200 seats, 550 seats were reduced.

The AICTE took the decision to reduce the seats as the colleges failed to upgrade infrastructure as stipulated in the guidelines.. `There are 15 to 20 colleges which need to be disciplined', Reddy said.

Inter academic year streamlines

Hyderabad: The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has come out with an `Academic Organiser’ (AO) to streamline the academic activity in the junior colleges all over the state. The AO 2002-2003 has been prepared with the objective of enforcing a uniform calendar year in all the government, aided and unaided junior colleges.

The Colleges which do not implement the AO would stand to lose their recognition (affiliation) with the Board. The AO is likely to come to effect immediately.

QQSUDA to acquire old school buildings

Aug 08, 2002:

Hyderabad: The Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority has decided to acquire half-a-dozen dilapidated school buildings housed in private premises in the Old City and take up reconstruction on war footing.

The government schools at Azampura, Petla Burj, Charmahal and Galbalguda are in a run down condition and may collapse at any time. The condition of the Government Deaf and Dumb school at Malakpet is also not good. `They are nothing short of death traps’, said QQSUDA Administrator J R Anand.

A committee will be constituted to negotiate with the owners of these buildings, he said

JNTU to tie up with US firm for new course

Aug 09, 2002:

Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has given permission to the Indian Chapter of Qualcore, a company based in Silicon Valley, to conduct MS course in very large scale integration (VLSI) chip design technology.

K Vidyadhara Rao, Minister for Industries, announcing this on Thursday, said the Government would approve the degree. This type of course is the first of its kind in the country, he said.

New courses of JNTU

Hyderabad: The Centre for Special Information Technology (CSIT) of JNTU has announced two short-term courses on Integrated GIS & CAD (four weeks duration) and Digital Photogrammetry (three weeks duration) starting from August 10. Further details can be obtained over phone 3308825, says a release.

ABVP seeks action against AU V-C

Aug 10, 2002:

Hyderabad: The state unit of ABVP has petitioned the Governor C Rangarajan against Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Y C Simhadri here on Friday complaining that his policies were anti-student.

In a letter to the Governor, the ABVP said the V-C has banned celebrations of national festivals and functions to observe anniversaries of national heroes. Pursuing of second PG or diploma courses was also banned by him, they said.

The ABVP urged the Governor to intervene.

Private guards for govt. schools

Aug 10, 2002:

Hyderabad: The state government is planning to post private security personnel at the government schools in city to protect the valuable properties as most of the schools lack watch and ward staff.

This was disclosed by Commercial Taxes Minister K Vijayarama Rao during his address to the students of Government Boys Primary School in Secunderabad Cantonment area on Friday as part of `Chaduvula Pandaga’ programme. He too advised the school development committees to attend the problems of electricity, water, toilets and other issues for the well maintenance of schools.

APSCHE releases list of fake universities

Aug 11, 2002: Hyderabad: The AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has released a list of fake universities as announced by the University Grants Commission (UGC). People contribute Rs.5.92 lakh to education

Aug 11, 2002:

Hyderabad: People in Hyderabad district contributed Rs.5.92 lakh towards Vidyanidhi, the education fund in the nine days from Aug 2, according to district collector Rajeshwar Tiwari.

In a release, he said that an equal amount would be contributed by the State Governmentand the fund would be utilised to provide basic amenities in schools. He said 12,864 children, including 472 dropouts were admitted in various schools in the district.

`Chaduvula pandaga, a continues process'

Aug 12, 2002:

Hyderabad: Minister forCommercial Taxes K Vijaya Rama Rao said that `Chaduvula Pandaga’ would be a continuous process. Participating on the concluding day of Education Festival at Mahaboobia Government High School on Sunday, Rao said the festival yielded good results. Out ofthe 90,000 school dropouts in city, 37,000 were admitted in various schools as part of the 10-day festival. Such programmes would be continued every year, he said.(city Eenadu)

CRPF school to admit children of civilians

Aug 12, 2002: Hyderabad: The CRPF School at Hakimpet in Ranga Reddy district will admit children of civilians for CBSE examination. The ratio of CRPF and civilian seats is 60:40. A non-profit and service-oriented institution, it was established in 1996-97. The Rs.7 crore project consists of primary and secondary buildings, hostels for boys and girls, playground and other facilities. The school also provides transport to students of far away places. DSC merit list on Aug 28

Aug 14, 2002: Hyderabad: The merit list of the candidates appeared for DSC-2002 for the selection of teachers’ posts will be published on August 28. Counselling process for theappointments will begin on September 1 and will end by September 5.

The education department released the list of the successful candidates under untrained teachers’ quota and also the final key.

Education Minister M Venkateswara Rao said that 4,84,604 candidates appeared for the DSC-2002 examination for 35,960 posts.

Education tourism at schools

Aug 14, 2002: Hyderabad: `Education Tourism’ aimed at sensitising school students on promotion of tourism and preservation of environment in the State, will be formally launched on Aug 17. The programme is a joint effort of the departments of tourism, school education and environment. Under the programme, highschool students of various government highschools will be taken to excursions to various places of historical and environmental importance.

IIIT joint ventures with IBM

Aug 15, 2002: Hyderabad: The International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) will be holding discussions with the IBM Centre of Excellence for conducting joint programmes and R & D, according to Ajay Sawhney, IT Secretary and Special Officer, IIIT.

Sawhney, at a Press conference on Wednesday, said the IBM had not closed down its centre, but had stopped conducting classes for the last three to four months.

BRAOU examinations

Aug 16, 2002: Hyderabad: M.A (economics, history, political science and public administration), M.Sc (mathematics) and MBA first year annual examinations of Dr B.R Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) will be held from October 5 to 10.

Students admitted in the academic year 2001-2002 and post-graduate students of previous batches ( 1996-2000) can also appear for the examinations. The last date for submission of registration forms is September 11. The registration forms can be collected from the study centre concerned or from the BRAOU examination branch, Jubilee Hills. Landscape design in B Arch

Aug 16, 2002: Hyderabad: The All India Council of Technical Education and the Council of Architecture, realizing the demand for professionals in landscape design architecture, have introduced a landscape design specialization course at the graduation level.

City-based Church of South India Institute of Technology, affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), is the first institute in the country to offer this course at the graduation level. The Institute has got the approval of AICTE and the State government.

Fake certificate racket busted

Aug 17, 2002: Hyderabad: The Commissioner’s Task Force (Central) sleuths on Thursday busted a fake certificate racket of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course with the arrest of three persons near Blue King Hotel at RTC Cross Roads in city.

The police seized fake identity cards, six bundles of B.Ed examination answer sheets belonging to Bundelkhand University of Jhansi and three mobile phones from the arrested persons, a release said.

National talent search prelims on Nov 10

Aug 17, 2002: Hyderabad: The state level National talent search(preliminary) written examination will be conducted at all district headquarters in the State on November 10. Students studying class 10 during the academic year 2002-2003 in any government recognised school including Kendriya Vidyalayas and schools affiliated to CBSE are eligible for the examination. The examination would be for 90 minutes.

MBA, MCA admissions

Aug 18, 2002: Hyderabad: The centralised admission for MBA, MCA courses for the 2002-2003 academic year in the non-minority colleges under the Osmania University are scheduled during August 22 and 29 at the Women’s College, Koti. The candidates are requestedto report at the college with the required certificates and fees.

APPSC examinations

Aug 19, 2002: Hyderabad: The AP Public Service Commission has stated that examinations for 21 categories of positions would be held in Hyderabad centres only between August 31 and September 4. Hall tickets and rejections are being despatched to candidates.

Spiritual training for teachers

Aug 19, 2002: Hyderabad: The State government will avail of the services of the spiritual organisation, Brahma Kumaris, in all teacher training programmes, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said.

Mr Naidu said about 360 teachers, who earlier participated in `train the trainers' programme held at Mt Abu headquarters of Brahma Kumaris, had returned with a good experience. There was a perceptible change in them, he added. Participating at a programme at Ramoji Film city, he had made it obligatory for all government officers and party activists to undergo training in rajagoya meditation, self management and stress free living.

Counselling for ANGRAU polytechnics students

Aug 20, 2002: Hyderabad:Counselling for admissions into agriculture and veterinary polytechnics of Acharya NG Ranga Agriculture University will be held at the College of Home Science at Saifabad here on August 27 and 28. The fate of paramedics hangs in the balance

Aug 20, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The fate of 1,523 candidates who took the multi-purpose health assistants (for males) examination on August 11 is hanging in the balance for no fault of theirs. The State medical and health department, as it received complaints, seized the certificates issued by the Betastha Institute of Health Sciences and the Beaula Institute of Health Sciences.

Those who already got jobs as multi-purpose health workers (male) in the recent past with certificates issued by these institutes are also worried about their future.

Rs.5.5 crore sanctioned for scholarships to SCs

Aug 21, 2002: Hyderabad: The State Government has sanctioned Rs.5.5 crores for payment of scholarships to Scheduled Castes students of various colleges of Hyderabad district for the academic year 2002-2003.

A release from the Deputy Director of Social Welfare department RV Prasada Raju, said that Rs.3.5 crores for payment of new scholarships and Rs.2 crores for renewal of old scholarships would be paid through the college principals concerned. The mess charges would be paid to the students through account payee cheques by the respective principals.

Shakuntala Devi to set up maths varsity

Aug 21, 2002: Hyderabad: Shakuntala Devi, the famous `human calculator’, announced her intention of setting up a Mathematical University in Hyderabad. She said to presspersons on Tuesday, it was a long-standing desire of hers to set up an institution which would carry on her `legacy’ of popularising mathematics among people.

She would ask the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, to allot her 100 acre land to build a campus which would house a formal mathematical university as well as informal centres for spreading interest and knowledge of mathematics, she said.

Fresh engineering students asked to report

Aug 22, 2002: Hyderabad: Candidates allotted by the Convener, EAMCET-2002, to the University College of Engineering (Autonomous), OU, for admission to its engineering courses for 2002-2003, have been asked to report at the college main building on August 24 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

They have been asked to report with the allotment letter, two recent passport size photographs and along with their parent or guardian. They are required to pay the autonomous college fee of Rs.5,580 through DD drawn in favour of Principal, University College of Engineering, OU.

MBBS admissions

Aug 22, 2002: Hyderabad: The last date for submission of application forms for admission into MBBS/BDS courses for the year 2002-2003 has been extended up to August 31. Consequently, the sale of application forms would continue till 5 p.m. on August 29. `Postal delay or loss in transit would not be approved’, the Registrar, NTR University of Health Sciences said in a statement.

Harinarayana appointed VC for central varsity

Aug 23, 2002: New Delhi: President APJ Abdul Kalam appointed noted aeronautical scientist K Harinarayana as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Hyderabad. He succeeds P Rama Rao who had been appointed scientific adviser to the Prime Minister recently.

Harinarayana is the chief of the Light Combat Aircraft project and will be involved in future versions of the plane, including the Medium Combat Aircraft. He worked with Kalam on the guided missile development programme.

Last date for IGNOU programmes is Aug 31

Aug 23, 2002: Hyderabad: The last date for applying for admission to various academic programmes being offered by the Hyderabad Regional Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University is August 31. The applications along with the programme fee by a bank draft and copies of the certificates to prove the eligibility should be submitted to the regional centre, V Vasudevan, the Regional Director, told a press conference here on Thursday.

Bogus college raided

Aug 24, 2002: Guntur: The district officials locked a bogus medical technology college here on Friday following the directions of director-general of medical services Dr K Anji Reddy.

The college management, without any recognition, had allegedly issued certificates to the students to appear for the ANM (male) examination in the medical and health department.

Hundreds of candidates, by obtaining certificates from the institute, appeared for the examination recently. The state government had withheld the results of ANM (male) examination pending verification of certificates

Indian students invited to study in Russian varisties

Aug 24, 2002: Hyderabad: A high level delegation from the Rostov region of Russia is currently visiting the twin cities to announce diverse educational opportunities for Indian students in Russian universities.

The Russian officials, including the Minister of Education of the Rostov region, Kovalev Leonid Fedrovich, at a press conference, said that their universities provide some of the best educational facilities in the world at prices comparable to India.

JNTU staff oppose private investment

Aug 24, 2002: Hyderabad: Teaching and non-teaching associations of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), on Friday, strongly opposed any private investment in the university. Dr Damodar, president of the JNTU main campus Teachers Association, at a press conference, said that the private investment would convert the academic institute into an industry. He was reacting to the news reports that Tata Foundation was planning to invest in two colleges of the university.(city Express,1)

`Integrate open education with other systems'

Aug 25, 2002: Hyderabad: Higher Education Council chairman Prof C Subba Rao said here on Saturday that there was a need to integrate open university education system with other systems of learning.

Delivering the inaugural address at a national conference at B R Ambedkar Open University, he said the open university system cannot afford to remain isolated. He stressed the need to have consortium of universities to take the open education system forward.

Free career counselling for Engineering BC students

Aug 25, 2002: Hyderabad: Free career counseling for Engineering second year students belonging to BC communities will be conducted at AP BC Study Circle, Nimboli Adda in city.

Circle director Prof Lajapati Rai, in a press release, said that the BC students in Hyderabad, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts can avail the opportunity. The counseling is conducted with the cooperation of Imprint Education Guidance Centre, he said.

Centre approves medical college at Kuppam

Aug 26, 2002: Hyderabad: The Central government has approved the People’s Education Society (PES) to establish a new medical college at Kuppam, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s constituency in Chittoor district, according to a PES Group of Institutions secretary M R Doraiswamy.

The medical college, christened as PES Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, would be inaugurated in October, he said at a press conference on Sunday.

Sanskrit course

Aug 26, 2002: Hyderabad: The Department of Sanskrit, Osmania University is offering a Certificate Course in Spoken Sanskrit, sponsored by the University Grants Commission, from September 1. The classes will be held at the University College of Arts & Social Sciences, OU, between 5.30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The last date for enrolment is August 30 and further details can be had from Keshav Narayan, Course Coordinator, Department of Sanskrit.

Digital library for engineering colleges

Aug 27, 2002: Hyderabad: The government is contemplating starting a digital library for all engineering colleges in the state and would take a final decision in this regard on August 31, said commissioner and director of technical education AR Sukumar.

The idea of converting material from print to digital would save crores of rupees as the step would be cost effective and time-saving.

The government would consult the Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Centre regarding technical assistance and hold discussions with the book publishers and authors of the scientific journals.

French classes

Aug 27, 2002: Hyderabad: The Department of French, OU, will offer an eight-week course in French from September 11 at the Arts College. Classes will be held between 5.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Students with an Intermediate or equivalent qualification are eligible to apply.

Application forms can be obtained from the office of the Foreign Languages, Arts College, OU, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The last date for receipt of applications is September 11.

Aug 27, 2002: Hyderabad: Governor C Rangarajan suggested four new steps – constant effort to improve teaching techniques, identifying new subject areas, playing a supplemental role for students in conventional institutions and close cooperation with conventional universities – for distance education to play a wider role in the present scenario.

Mahila Sabha launches course in e-printing

Aug 28, 2002: Hyderabad: The Literacy House of Andhra Mahila Sabha (AMS) launched a three month course in e-printing/pre-press at Integral Digital Education in Arts on its premises at Vidyanagar on Tuesday.

The course would impart training in MS-Word, page making,Photoshop and Corel Draw. The course is open to those with an aptitude for art and creative work. Classes would be held for two hours from Monday to Saurday and the course fee is Rs 2,500.(city page 3)

Professor Anantaswamy appointed OU VC

Aug 28, 2002: Hyderabad: The State Government, on Tuesday, has appointed Professor J Anantaswamy as Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University. Anantaswamy is director of the university’s PG centers located in districts and chairman of Chemistry Board of Studies.

Anantaswamy hails from the Backward Classes and is a native of Karimnagar district. His appointment fulfils both the demands that had gained strength in recent days. The demands are that the VC be appointed from the Backward Classes and from Telangana region.

Appointment of teachers from Sept 19

Aug 29, 2002: Hyderabad: The process of appointment of teachers as per the rankings in DSC-2002 examination will be commenced from September 19. Secondary Education Minister Mandava Venkateswara Rao held discussions with higher officials in the education department and finalised the schedule of counseling for the appointment of teachers. Schedule for the counseling for the transfer of teachers has also been finalised.

Last date for Inter exam fee

AP Paramedical Council to be set up soon

Aug 30, 2002: Hyderabad: The state government will establish AP Paramedical Council on the lines of Medical Council of India, in about three months, to tighten vigil over institutes offering paramedical courses.

Medical and Health Minister N Janardhan Reddy, at a press conference on Thursday, said as there was no mechanism to keep track of the rapid growth of paramedical institutions, the standards have come down steeply. The new council will have powers to physical verification of the institutes including infrastructure and the qualify of teaching.

Lapses in JNTU evaluation

Aug 30, 2002: Hyderabad: Owing to the lack of adequate experienced faculty, the evaluation procedure for the engineering examination at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) is fraught with discrepancies.

The three JNTU constituent colleges at Kakinada, Anantapur and Kukatpally have student strength of 1,600 in B.Tech course apart from 400 students in M.Tech and Ph.D programmes. As these colleges lack adequate staff, private colleges lecturers are taken on contract basis to correct the examination papers. The evaluation is hence being done by inexperienced B.Tech qualified lecturers whereas the job needsexperienced hands.

AP signs pact with Intel to train 10,000 teachers

Aug 31, 2002: Hyderabad: The AP government on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with Intel Corporation, the world’s largest chip maker, under which Intel will train 10,000 teachers in the state to teach technology based modern and future education programmes.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, on behalf of AP government, and Intel’s chief executive officer Craig R Barret signed the MoU.

Supplementary pass students get BIE nod

Aug 31, 2002: Hyderabad: Principals of junior colleges and composite degree colleges in the state are permitted to admit candidates who failed in the class X Central Board of Secondary Examination and ICSE annual examination 2002 and later passed in the subsequent examination conducted in the month of July 2002 into first year Intermediate course on or before September 5 subject to availability of seats.

According to the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) commissioner B Kripanandam, these candidates are eligible to write the Intermediate Public Examination advance supplementary June/July 2003 only and not eligible to write the IPE March 2003.
