Madras University to offer MBA onlineSep 04, 2002: Chennai: For the first time in the country, the Institute of Correspondence Education (ICE), University of Madras will be offering MBA degree online. ICE director Dr A Swaminathan says ICE plans to admit a minimum of 1,200 students for the MBA degree online programme this academic year. The programme plans to target more than 5,000 such teachers and hope to cover all the targeted teachers by the end of November. The first phase of training has already completed with 90 teachers getting trained at the Regional Institute of English, Bangalore, officials said.
Proposal to construct 64 schools for girlsSep 06, 2002: Hyderabad: The State government is planning to set up 64 social welfare schools for girls under `Velugu’ programme. They will come up in the districts where the girl child literacy is less, said Social Welfare Minister J R Pushparaj. Speaking at a felicitation programme organised by the AP Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society, the Minister said that out of the 230 social welfare schools, 32 had secured cent % results in the SSC examinations last year.
44 students hurt as sschool bus overturnsSep 07, 2002: Hyderabad: Forty four students of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School were injured, 11 of them seriously when the school bus in which they were traveling overturned near NAC ground at Madhapur on Friday due to negligent driving of the bus driver. One of the two teachers traveling in the bus also suffered grievous injuries. The seriously injured students and the teacher were admitted to Apollo hospital in Jubilee Hills while those who suffered minor injuries were treated as out patients. Computer-aided teaching in govt high schoolsSep 09, 2002: Hyderabad: The Directorate of School Education will introduce computer-aided teaching on a pilot basis in about 1,000 schools within a month. In all, there are 11,464 high schools in the state. The initiative would aim at introducing computer concepts to the school students as well to supplement the teaching, particularly in mathematics and sciences. As part of the project, power, internet and other facilities would be extended to the schools, said school education commissioner Manhoman Singh. Mumbai varsity to offer course in aviationSep 09, 2002: Mumbai: Civil Aviation Minister Shah Nawaz Hussin inaugurated a three-year BSc degree course in aviation at the 145-year old Mumbai University. Teachers gherao Tribal Welfare MinisterSep 10, 2002: Visakhapatnam: Tribal Welfare Minister M Manikumari was gheraoed by teachers at Paderu on Monday. The teachers organised a relay hunger strike near ITDA office demanding redressal of their grievances. Aided lecturers criticise State policySep 14, 2002: Hyderabad: The Aided Junior College Lecturers’ Association has issued an ultimatum to the State Government to implement their long pending demands or face the wrath of the teaching community. Association’s general secretary K G Deekshitulu, at a press conference on Friday, condemned the step-motherly attitude of the government towards the teachers working in aided colleges. There are 200 aided colleges all over the state with 5000 teachers strength, he said. Action against colleges flouting normsSep 16, 2002: Nizamabad: Minister for Technical Education Nerella Anjaneyulu has said that the Government would take serious note of engineering colleges flouting guidelines in functioning. The Minister was referring to complaints of some engineering college managements, running the colleges away from the places where they had been sanctioned. He referred to one such college in Kamareddy town which was functioning in Secunderabad. Similarly, there are some more colleges which are ignoring the AICTE and State Government norms, he said.

Nagarjuna University students stage dharnaSep 17, 2002: Guntur : Students of Nagarjuna University staged a dharna demanding action against the warden of the ladies’ hostel, Vijayamma, who had allegedly asked the girl students to undergo virginity test. Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated on the university campus on September 10. When the boys were taking the idol for immersion on Saturday, they had invited the girl students to accompany them. The warden had refused permission to the girls to leave the hostel. The girl students, however, accompanied the immersion procession. Angered over this, the warden asked the girl students to undergo virginity test and also made a police complaint. Students body demand hike in scholarshipSep 17, 2002: Hyderabad: Post Graduate students and Research Scholars’ Welfare Association on Monday demanded hike in the scholarships for students pursuing M.Phil and Ph.D courses at Osmania University. At a meeting of the association, the members passed a resolution appealing to the university management to convert the scholarships into fellowship. Though scholarships had been hiked to students pursuing various courses twice since 1992, such facility was not extended to the M.Phil and Ph.D students, they said. SCERT proposes grading system for SSCSep 19, 2002: Hyderabad: The State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has proposed a grading system in the secondary school certificate (SSC) examination on the lines of CBSE and ICSE. The proposed grading system will have four slabs – A grade (80 to 100 %), B grade (60 to 79 %), C grade (40 to 59 %) and D grade (below 40 %). The SCERT is in favour of replacing the existing system to check the dropout rate after SSC and to stop corporate schools from capitalising on the marks scored by their students. Orientation Course for advocatesSep 20, 2002: Hyderabad: NALSAR is planning to conduct an orientation course for advocates intending to appear for the examination for the post of junior civil judge. The classes, which would cover Code of Criminals and Civil Procedures along with IPC and the Evidence Act, would be held at NALSAR University, premises at Barkatpura in city from September 28 to October 20. Move to allow foreign varsities opposedSep 27, 2002: New Delhi: A deemed university in Tamil Nadu has strongly opposed the Centre’s attempts `to open the doors of the country to foreign universities under the pretext of globalisation but at the same time strangulating private institutes in India’. R Sethuraman, vice-chancellor of the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy, in a letter sent to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, said there should be a level playing field for all the institutes in India without any discrimination. Vocational courses in over 3,000 collegesSep 27, 2002: Hyderabad: The budgeted outlay of the University Grants Commission would go up by four times to Rs.600 crore, UGC member Prof BH Briz Kishore said and added new vocational courses would be introduced in over 3,000 colleges across the country. At a press conference, he said only 1,877 colleges at present were offering vocational courses. As part of its efforts to generate courses that have a high demand, UGC would give Rs.9 lakh to each college for each new programme in Science stream. Of this, Rs.7 lakh would be a non-recurring grant for infrastructure. Govt lecturers will learn to teach for EAMCETSep 28, 2002: Hyderabad: The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) would soon appoint resource persons for all subjects to train lecturers of the government junior colleges in rural areas to prepare students for EAMCET in their respective colleges. The coaching classes for the students would be held once or twice a week. The performance of the students in the first year would be taken into consideration before starting the coaching.

Junior doctors' stir against GOSep 29, 2002: Hyderabad: AP Junior Doctors Association announced a state-wide indefinite strike from November 1, in protest against the GO Ms No. 203. The GO made it compulsory for the students joining super-speciality, PG medicine and dental specialities to execute a bond for an amount of Rs 20 lakh for super-speciality and Rs.15 lakh for post-graduate courses, if they fail to complete the course or fail to work in the government hospitals for a period of five years. ANGRAU to run Farm School on AIRSep 30, 2002: Hyderabad: Acharya N G Ranga Agriculture University (ANGRAU) and Akasavani together will run Farm School through five radio stations - at Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Warangal, Visakhapatnam and Cuddapah - on every Monday from January 2003.
