40 students injured in police lathicharge

Nov 01, 2002: Hyderabad: At least 40 students were injured when police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse a rally organised by the All India Students Federation (AISF) comprising nearly 1,000 students at Indira Park here on Thursday. Two AISF leaders suffered serious injuries and they are said to be in a critical condition at the Osmania General Hospital.

The students were opposing the government’s decision to disallow commerce students from appearing for B.Ed courses. Trouble broke out when the rally reached Indira Park from Baghlingampally.

Govt has say in minority schools

Nov 01, 2002: New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that though the minority educational institutions (MEIs) had an unfettered right to establish an institution of their choice, the right administer them was not absolute. The state could apply regulatory measures for educational excellence even when the MEIs are unaided, a fractured 6:5 judgement said.

The Bench declined to answer two questions in this regard.

Grading for Intermediate colleges proposed

Nov 01, 2002: Hyderabad: As part of the reforms in the education sector, the state government proposes to grade Intermediate colleges based on their performance, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said here on Thursday.

The grading would help the colleges analyse the shortcomings and improve the performance, he said

Participating at a seminar on `The challenges in Intermediate Education and the Role of Principals’, Naidu said the Government would examine the various suggestions put forth by the representatives of teacher associations to ensure quality education.

GATE mock examination on Jan 19

Nov 02, 2002: Hyderabad: A mock GATE-2003 examination will be organised by The Institution of Engineering and Management Services (TIEMS) on January 19. The mock exam will be held according to the revised pattern of GATE, scheduled to be held on February 9, TIEMS director G Srinivas Rao told mediapersons on Friday.

The revised pattern of examination would be of objective type with three-hour duration rather than the conventional type with long question and answers, he said.

HC directive to NTR varsity on entrance exam

Nov 02, 2002: Hyderabad: The High Court directed the NTR Health University to consider feasibility of announcing the Key answers of PG entrance tests. The judge posted the case to November 7. Some candidates filed a writ saying that the announcement of answers would ensure transparency.

HC directs AP not to permit new engg colleges

Nov 02, 2002: Hyderabad: In a significant order, the AP High Court, on Friday, directed the State Government not to permit new engineering colleges in the State until a consultative process was initiated with the universities.

Justice L Narasimha Reddy gave the interim order taking into account the `irrational proliferation’ of engineering colleges.

B Shankaraiah and another, in a writ petition, complained that the notification for starting new colleges was being issued without conducting any survey on the requirement and this could lead to fall of standards.

APSRTC exam on Nov 17

Nov 03, 2002: Hyderabad: The entrance test for the recruitment of traffic/mechanical supervisor (trainee) posts in the State Road Transport Corporation will be held on November 17 at Anantapur, Cuddapah, Guntur, Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Kurnool, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Tirupati, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Warangal.

Eligible candidates, who do not receive the hall-tickets by November 12, can approach the regional centre concerned and have the duplicate hall-tickets, a press release said.

Architects seek role in heritage status plea

Nov 03, 2002: Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Architects on Saturday sought a role in preparing the city’s case for obtaining heritage city status from UNESCO.

Addressing a press conference, IIA city chapter chairman DT Vinod Kumar said that the state government was not moving ahead on preparing proper proposal seeking UNESCO’s recognition for Hyderabad as a heritage city.

`The deadline for applications for 2003 is February next and if the government allows us to do it and gives us assistance, we will prepare the application in two months, he said.

Opinions differ on weightage marks for Inter

Nov 04, 2002: Hyderabad: The State government has come under criticism for confusing students by keeping alive the issue of Intermediate marks weightage in EAMCET. Some officials are hinting at the possibility of giving weightage to Intermediate marks.

A senior official is said to be pushing the proposal under the influence of the strong corporate lobby of Intermediate colleges. Though the reforms committee on EAMCET ignored the weightage proposal and went ahead with other reforms, the official has now been trying to pursue the proposal through the Board of Intermediate Education.

Schools asked to register for science exhibition

Nov 04, 2002: Hyderabad: The District Educational Officer, Mohan Reddy, has appealed to schools in Hyderabad district to register them selves for the five-day district science fair scheduled to be held at St. Pious High School, Musheerabad.

In a statement here, Reddy said that the sub-themes of the exhibition were food and agriculture, environment management, health and nutrition, transport and communication, energy source utilisation and education technology.

City college to offer UK degree

Nov 06, 2002: Hyderabad: City-based Niraj International College (NIC) and the Waltham Forest College (WFC), London, will jointly launch a bachelor’s degree programme in hospitality and service industry management (BHSIM) from August 2003.

WFC assistant director Christine Vanetizan, at a press conference on Tuesday, said for the first two years students could study at Niraj College and the final year with any of three UK-based universities. The universities include Middlesex, Thames Valley and Salsbury University.

Evening course in foreign languages

Nov 06, 2002: Hyderabad: Nizam College is offering an eight-week evening course in German, French and Russian languages from November 11. The courses are designed towards attaining a basic oral competence in those languages.

New rules for minority colleges soon

Nov 06, 2002: Hyderabad: The state government will soon frame rules for admissions to minority educational institutions (MEI), keeping in view the recent Supreme Court judgement.

The AP State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE), the apex body monitoring higher education in the state, has commissioned a group of legal experts to study various aspects of the apex court order on MEIs.

The opinion of the advocate general and the legal department would be sought before the government comes up with a G.O, APSCHE chairman Prof C Subba Rao said on Tuesday.

Doctors seek clarity on GO 154

Nov 07, 2002: Hyderabad: The AP Government Doctors Association has sought the State Government’s clarification on the modalities for the absorption of Government doctors by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) from the Directorate of Health (DH). The option form for absorption of eligible candidates should spell out the modalities as this was not clear in the GO 154, a delegation f the Association told the Medical and Health Minister Kodela Sivaprasada Rao on Wednesday.

Govt to get tough with private engg colleges

Nov 08, 2002: Hyderabad: The AP Government has decided to take a tough stand against private engineering colleges, which were permitted in rural areas but are actually functioning in urban centres. The State Cabinet, which met here on Thursday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, is understood to have taken a serious view of several private engineering colleges flouting the location norm.

JNTU sends question papers through Net

Nov 08, 2002: Hyderabad: The JawaharlalNehru Techlogical University (JNTU) conducted the third year engineering examination based on the new examination pattern. Question papers were sent to various examination centres on the Internet through CDs on Wednesday.

Apart from its three constituent colleges, the examination was held in its affiliated colleges in seven districts, said JNTU vice-chancellor Y Venkatarami Reddy.

Nov 09, 2002: Hyderabad: Counselling for selection of candidates for provisional admission for vacancies arising after the first selection for the BAMS, BHMS and BNYS courses will be held at the NTR University of Health Sciences at 10. a.m. on Nov 14.

All candidates who have applied for admission into BAMS, BHMS and BNYS courses for 2002-2003 and who fulfil the eligibility criteria are eligible to attend counselling. Candidates who were absent in earlier selections are also eligible, says a release.

Nov 09, 2002: Hyderabad: The Association of British Scholars is organising a seminar on `Post-graduate medical education in United Kingdom’ at 4.30 p.m. at the learning centre of the NIMS on November 11.

Admission notice for MBA in Central University

Nov 12, 2002: Hyderabad: The Central University of Hyderabad has notified admissions for MBA programme for the academic session 2003-2005. The issue of prospectus and applications is in progress. The university has linked its MBA admissions with the results of Common Admission Test being conducted on November 24.

Girls in hostel consume poison due to harassment

Nov 13, 2002: Kurnool: In a sensational incident, two minor girls, both staying in a government girls hostel, consumed insecticide allegedly due to the harassment by the matron here on Tuesday. While one of the girls died at the Kurnool Government Hospital, the condition of the second girl is stated to be critical.

The students belong to class IX were reportedly harassed by the hostel matron Mary.Parents demanded punitive action against the hostel matron.

Intel-JNTU pact for training teachers

Nov 13, 2002: Hyderabad: The Intel Corporation has entered into an MoU with the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) and the CVR College of Engineering Hyderabad to train teachers first and students next in computer architecture and microprocessors.

The MoU was signed in the presence of the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in his chambers at the Assembly on Monday.

JNTU offers two new courses

Nov 15, 2002: Hyderabad: The Centre for Spatial Information Technology of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University will offer two short-term courses – Integrated GIS & CAD and Digital Photogrammetry – from Nov 18. The two courses will be offered at its Masab Tank campus.

JNTU students boycott exams

Nov 15, 2002: Hyderabad: Third year students of the Photography and Visual Communications course of College of Fine Arts in Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University boycotted their first examination on Wednesday.

The students cited many reasons for this decision. The college does not have the required equipment to conduct practicals in VHS Video Technology and Cinematography Technology, they said.

Minister responds positively to commerce students

Nov 15, 2002: Hyderabad: The government appears to have decided to scrap its orders barring commerce graduates from taking the B.Ed entrance. A decision to this effect was reportedly conveyed by school education minister M Venkateswara Rao to a delegation of joint action committee of students’ organisation which met the minister in the Assembly on Thursday.

The AISF and PDSU leaders said that the minister responded positively.

Six arrested for scholarship scam

Nov 15, 2002: Hyderabad: Six persons, including the prime accused R Motla Naik, were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the pre-matric scholarship scam.

Naik, along with a few social welfare and audit office staff allegedly siphoned off Rs 4 crore meant for distribution among Dalit and backward community school children.

Nov 16, 2002: Hyderabad: The Child Rights Cell, the first of its kind in the country, opened in the School Education Commissionerate on Friday, where students or parents can lodge complaints against teachers violating child rights.

Changes in EAMCET mooted

Nov 16, 2002: Hyderabad: The Technical Education Minister N Anjaneyulu has said that big changes may be introduced in EAMCET from 2003 reducing the number of questions to 160 from the earlier 200 but allowing the same three-hour time to candidates.

The Minister sounded positive regarding the proposal to give weightage marks for performance in the qualifying examination – Intermediate.

AU students unions chalk out agitation plans

Nov 18, 2002: Hyderabad: The joint action committee of students unions formed in the wake of the unrest on Andhra University campus has chalked out an agitational programme in support of its demands.

The committee comprising the NSUI, the SFI, the AISF, the PDSU, the AIDSO and the PDSO, urged lifting of prohibitory orders and police camping on the campus and quashing of the cases against students, besides recalling of the Vice-chancellor.

The student had to read the mind of the Examiner and assume the same condition that the Examiner assumes. Or he will lose his marks. The institute is playing with the future of so many candidates.

Govt to probe against AU VC's role

Nov 19, 2002: Hyderabad: Minister for Higher Education Md Farooq said the government would order an inquiry into the allegations against Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Y C Simhadri. The Minister told the Assembly that the VC needed to change his attitude. There were complaints that the Vice-Chancellor had ordered the removal of Mahatma Gandhi portrait. All the issues would be probed, the Minister said.

Lecturers' forum plans indefinite strike

Nov 19, 2002: Hyderabad: The Joint Council of Action of Lecturers has announced series of agitational programmes in protest against government’s failure to address their long pending problems.

JAC leaders P Govindaswamy, G Sridhar Reddy and KG Deekshitulu said that thousands of lecturers and non-teaching staff would picket the directorate of collegiate education and directorate of Intermediate Education on Nov 20.

Aided college teachers go to minister with demands

Nov 20, 2002: Hyderabad: The AP Aided Degree College Lecturers’ Association met the Minister for Higher Education, M.D. Farooq, and presented their demands regarding salary and promotion issues to him here on Tuesday.

The Association said that if the Government did not act on these assurances they would organise dharna at district collectorates on December 18, which would be observed as protest Day.

AU Vice-Chancellor's clarification

Nov 20, 2002: Visakhapatnam: In response to the discussion in the state assembly on Mondayon the prevailing situation on AU campus, the Vice Chancellor, Y.C.Simhadri on Tuesday clarified he had never disrespected the leaders or ordered removal of their portraits in the University. He further explained that after the Renovation of the buildings on the Campus new portraits of the leaders were added to the existing portraits and prominently displayed in the newly constructed reading room of the Nagarjuna hostel.

Aided colleges' staff stage demos

Nov 21, 2002: Hyderabad: Several lecturers, junior lecturers members of non teaching staff and principals of various aided colleges staged picketing at the offices of the director of collegiate Education and Commissionerate of Intermediate Education here today urging the state government to provide immediate solutions to their long pending demands.

The joint council of action (JCA) M J Manikya Rao, P Govinda Swamy, MVV Subba Rao and others demanded payment of salaries on the first every month. They demanded that the government should take immediate measures to improve the quality of Higher Education.

AU bandh total and peaceful.

Nov 21, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The bandh observed by the teachers and non-teaching employees in support of the ongoing agitation by the students of Andhra University here on Wednesday was total and peaceful. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the university. Heavy police security was made at all the important locations including the Registrar’s office. The students are eagerly waiting for the state-wide agitations slated for November 22 and November 28.

Nov 21, 2002: New Delhi: The Union public service commission on Wednesday said the Indian Economic service examinations will be held as per schedule. The examination will be held from November 23 to November 25 as announced earlier, a UPSC press release said.

Recognise colleges, CM urged

Nov 21, 2002: Hyderabad: The association of New B.Ed College Managements, Wednesday, urged Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu to direct officials to recognise new B.Ed colleges and allot students to these Colleges.

Addressing a press conference here, Association general secretary P Papa Rao said there was a huge demand for B.Ed course in the state; Rao said the gap between the demand and supply. Stating that college Managements had spent RS 30 lakh each, he said that the government should immediately recognise the college.

AU students protest takes a new turn

Nov 22, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The two-week-long protest at Andhra University took an embarrassing turn on Thursday when hundreds of students submitted a memorandum to the superintendent of hospital for mental care, urging him to check up the mental condition of Vice-Chancellor Y Simhadri.

Sources told ‘The times of India’ that probe committee convener and higher Education commissioner R V Subba Rao was reluctant because his position does not permit him to probe against the VC, who was appointed by the governor. On Wednesday, the protest came under bitter criticism from a group of retired professors. The professors said that the VC was doing his best to improve the standards of the University.

Govt urged to sanction new BEd colleges

Nov 22, 2002: Hyderabad: Members of Association of BEd college managements (ABCM) has urged the State Government to accord sanction to new private Bed colleges for the academic year 2003-04.Addressing a press conference, ABCM general secretary P Papa Rao said that the state government had issued a notification in May 2001 inviting applications to start 63 new colleges. He said that the existing 88 colleges were not able to cater to the growing Educational needs of the students as a majority over 2.6 lakh students, who had appeared for the ED-CET this year, had qualified. The demand for qualified teaching staff was also increasing and the government was appointing untrained teachers as there was a shortage of trained staff.

Intermediate weitage marks from 2004-05

Nov 23, 2002: Hyderabad: The system of weightage in the Intermediate course of getting admission into engineering and medical streams will be introduced from the academic year 2004-05.The government has reduced the marks for the Eamcet examination to 160 and wanted to give weightage of 20 marks in %age terms from both the years of Intermediate to make a total of 200 from the next academic year. But with the decision deferred, the government is expected to adjust the Eamcet marks marginally.

The idea behind introducing the weightage system is to bring the focus back on the Intermediate education, which is said to have been given a back seat by the students in the run up to entrance examination for medicine and engineering courses.

Medical colleges asked to step up anti-ragging measures

Nov 23, 2002: Hyderabad: The Health Minister, Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, has said that the principals of Government medical and dental colleges have been instructed to follow Anti-ragging measures by constituting various committees. The parents, secret counsellors, disciplinary and vigilance committees were suggested for the colleges, control rooms should also be set up on college premises, hostels and other vulnerable places to get posted with information about ragging, he told media persons here on Friday.

The principals of colleges, hostel wardens and heads of departments would monitor the menace, he added.

Results of bridge course

Nov 23, 2002: The Board of Intermediate Education has released the results of the bridge course in November this year. Of the 1,051 candidates who appeared for the Examinations held for Intermediate vocational pass outs of Reconstructed vocational courses, 168 have passed. The successful candidates are permitted to pursue Engineering and medical education. The Memorandum of marks have been dispatched to colleges.

Open University MBA exams

Nov 25, 2002: Hyderabad: The MBA final year examinations of BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) will be conducted from January 20 to 25. The last date for submission of filled-in registration forms at the respective study centres was December 20.The students of earlier batches with backlogs can contact the University examination branch for registration forms. The hall tickets can be collected from the study centres.

Students vacate AU hostels

Nov 25, 2002: Visakhapatnam: Students of Andhra University started vacating their hostels rooms on Sunday. The university staff went round the hostel blocks asking the inmates to vacate by afternoon. Mild tension prevailed at the Nagarjuna and Krishna Devaraya hostel blocks when the students refused to vacate the hostel. However, they later relented and vacated the rooms. The students left raising slogans against the vice-chancellor and the administration .

V-C annonces holidays,sparks off fresh row

Nov 25, 2002: Visakhapatnam: Even as the three-member committee constituted by the state government is yet to pay a visit to Andhra University to enquire into the alleged anti-student decisions taken by Vice-Chancellor Y C Simhadri, controversy surrounds the latter’s announcement on indefinite holidays.

The Vice-Chancellor on Friday night announced indefinite holidays for all the colleges, PG centres and other educational institutions affiliated to the University in-view of the growing tensions which were posing a law and order problem. The AU management cited reasons like outsiders intruding into the campus and the students’ non-cooperation to close the university for an indefinite period.

B.Ed results out

Nov 26, 2002: The results of Osmania University B.Ed annual examinations held in September/October have been released and are on display at the University branch .One can also log on to www.ourresults.com for results. Marks memoranda and provisional certificates can be obtained from the respective colleges on or after November 28.

Low standard of science teaching worries NCERT

Nov 26, 2002: Hyderabad: The decline in standard of teaching basic science in schools and colleges across the country worries the National council of Education research and training. According to Prof RD Shukla, the mathematics and science department head of the NCERT, “there is a need to rekindle scientific temper show students what science is, and review how science is taught in schools and colleges because that is where scientific temper and interest in science would be born or snuffed out”.

Students are losing interest in science because of lack of practical classes and they started opting for professional courses such as business management, medicine and others because they have become more glamorous.

Urge to CM for B.Ed admissions

Nov 26, 2002: Hyderabad: Opposition leader Y S Rajashekhara Reddy urged chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu to look into delay in counselling for B.Ed course admissions, the result of which was released more than a month ago.

He said that several students lost their chances of joining other post-graduate courses due to delay in B.Ed admissions and that the government’s delay in decisions is affecting more than 2.50 lakh students, who wanted to take up the teaching profession.

Nov 27, 2002: Hyderabad: The training organisation of the AP Khadi and village industries board will conduct programmes in 20 vocational courses. They are providing free training along with food facility. For the benefit of those who complete the training, the board will sanction subsidy for securing loans from Nationalised banks, to set up self employment rural units under Gramodyog Rozgar yojna.

Delay in supply of study material.

Nov 28, 2002: The inordinate delay by Dr B R Ambedkar Open University in supplying study material to students might throw their academic year into disarray, affecting their final examinations. These students have to be supplied with the new study material since their syllabus has been updated. The students allege that proof-reading of some books was on now and it would take a lot of time to be printed and sent to students.

Govt to scout for MBAs, IT grads

Nov 28, 2002: Hyderabad: MBA, MCA and IIIT graduates will be eligible for recruitment as State Development Officers. The government is also contemplating graduates from management, computer sciences and other technical courses to appear for the Andhra Pradesh Public Service commission’s Group II and III examinations. APPSC member C Chandrasekhar said the syllabus for the recruitment examination would be modified according to the convenience of the students. The commission recruits about 5,000 people every year for different services in the state.

Hoax call leads to cancellation of BE exam

Nov 28, 2002: Hyderabad: A bomb hoax call leads to cancellation of BE examinations at an engineering college in Bowenpally today. The Karshik Engineering college was evacuated and the BE examination of second year students were cancelled and was postponed to next week.

CM urged to intervene in B.Ed admission process

Nov 29, 2002: Hyderabad: The BJP general secretary, K. Laxman, has urged the chief minister, N.Chandrababu Naidu, to intervene in the B.Ed. admissions and instruct the authorities to speed up the process. He further said that about 2.50 lakh students had appeared for the B.Ed entrance test the result of which were declared on September 12, but the process of admissions had not yet started. This delay was causing a lot of hardship to students who had qualified.

JNTU relies on web to plug paper leakage

Nov 29, 2002: Hyderabad: Disgraced and disgusted with question paper leakage allegations, the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University has come out with an “electronic distribution of examination papers” system to be implemented from the current academic year for all B.tech examinations conducted by the University. The highlights of the new system are multiple question papers and Web-based technology for distribution of question papers to all examination centres.

These encrypted question papers are sent through the Internet and CDs to all affiliated colleges, eliminating the need for printing of question papers by a printer and carrying the question papers in physical form.

Students boycott classes

Nov 29, 2002: Hyderabad: Students of various colleges in the city boycotted the classes on Thursday demanding that the Govt shouldrecall the Andhra University Vice-Chancellor, Y Simhadri, and reopen the hostels closed in the university. Classes were boycotted and a bandh was observed in all Universities.

Higher education council take 'IT-ready' initiative

Nov 30, 2002: Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) has identified 15 colleges in the city, targeting final year students, to equip them with communication and personality development skills so as to meet the growing demand of jobs in the IT Enabled Services. Good response had been gained from the identified colleges.

This is the first time that the APSCHE has chosen the colleges to train the students. Till now it has been targeting students who want to undergo this training and conduct an eight- week course. So far, three batches have successfully completed the course and have gained employment in GE, HSBC and Nova. More companies are evincing interest in the programme since they get “ready made” candidates who don’t need further training.

New medical and dental colleges likely from next year

Nov 30, 2002: Hyderabad: The State Government will permit 20 more medical and 30 more dental colleges in private sector in the next two to three years. This decision has been taken by the government with the intension of providing better Medicare to the people which in turn is dependent on developing medical education. The medical and dental colleges would have an intake of 100 students each.

NIIT offers Swift Jyothi

Nov 30, 2002: NIIT will offer Swift Jyothi, a two-week programme for Rs 749. It will enable the starters to use e-mail, web browsing, web processing and accounting packages. The programme is available in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi and Gujarati apart from English. NIIT will provide free computer literacy programmes for about 10,000 people as an encouraging response to the world computer literacy day.
