AU colleges to reopen tomorrow

Dec 02, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The Andhra University administration has decided to reopen campus colleges, hostels and PG centres at Kakinada and Etcherla on Tuesday. In a one-line circular signed by all four campus colleges, it was stated that the University campus colleges, PG Centre-Kakinada and PG Centre-Etcherla in Srikakulam, would be reopened on Tuesday. University students called off their three-day hunger strike following the announcement made by the management.

Hackers strip state education site

Dec 02, 2002: Hyderabad: The hackers seem to have struck again on the centre owned web sites. The hackers this time targeted www.education.nic.in, a web site hosted by the department of education, and the victim is our very own state council of higher education. Except for giving latest information on who are the Minister and Secretary of school education, the site has not been updated for the past three years.

Job oriented certificate course

Dec 02, 2002: The college of Engineering, Osmania University, is conducting a 14-week job-oriented certificate course ‘Small Industries Management programme'. Graduates and Diploma holders are eligible to apply. The last date for submission of application forms is December 21.

APSCHE and OU creates new websites

Dec 03, 2002: Hyderabad: AP State Council Education in a press release stated that the council had abandoned the previous website www.apsche.com and created an interactive new website www.apsche.org. Meanwhile Osmania University has also commissioned its new website www.osmaniauniversity.ac.in and a separate website www.ourresults.com to integrate the site with eseva for a wide access.

Engineering college seek 10% quota

Dec 03, 2002: Hyderabad: The Self-Finance Rural Engineering College Management’s Association has suggested that the government earmark 10% of engineering seats for the management while filling the rest through counselling based on either EMCET ranking or Intermediate marks. The officials said the Government could fix the fee for these seats that however should be more than the fee decided for merit students. They also felt that the unfilled seats in the counselling should not be surrendered to the colleges since it was leading to an unhealthy competition thus undermining the course and the colleges.

Governor, CM pledge support to the NIIT mission

Dec 03, 2002: Hyderabad: Governor C Rangarajan and Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu participating in a programme organised by the NIIT on the occasion of World Computer Literacy Day, the governor launched the ‘swift jyoti’ course, a specially priced training module used for NIIT’s computer literacy drive. He also released the Indian language software ‘Windik’. The simple to comprehend ‘swift jyoti’ programme is a two-week, 12 hour, available in four Indian languages-Hindi, Tamil, Marathi and Gujarati apart from English.

AU opens amidst tight security

Dec 04, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The Andhra University reopened on Tuesday amidst tight security with only 20% of students turning up for classes. There was heavy security at all important places in the University to prevent untoward incidents. The authorities opened one common mess for the Arts College, two for engineering students and one for the girl students anticipating thin attendance and mild protest from the students.

Medical counselling to resume soon

Dec 04, 2002: Hyderabad: The second phase of counselling for administrations into medical and dental colleges will be resumed very soon. About 20% of seats remained to be filled in these colleges with the bulk having been allotted earlier to candidates on the basis of their ranks in EMCET-2002. The process of admissions would be continued on the basis of the notification issued for the current year.

Dental college permitted to admit students

Dec 05, 2002: Hyderabad: The counselling for admissions to medical and dental courses by the NTR University of Health Sciences from December 11 will include the Mamata Dental college at Khammam, following the renewal of permission to the college to admit the second batch of BDS students during the current academic year. The ministry of Health and Family welfare granted the renewal of permission to the college to admit hundred students. Eighty-Five seats will be offered to EMCET rank holders of 2002.

OU to link website to e-Seva centres

Dec 05, 2002: Results of examinations conducted by the Osmania University can be accessed throughout the state with the University’s contemplation to link its website with e-Seva centres for wider access and improved service. The website has been created exclusively to meet the requirements of examination branch and make them available on the net. Apart from results, the website contains Online verification data for visa purposes, details of award of Ph.D and M.Phil, procedure for obtaining certificates, facility for downloading forms and examination schedules.

Private institutions get breather on recruitment

Dec 05, 2002: Hyderabad: A division bench of the High court permitted private educational institutions in the state to go ahead with their recruitment for 50% of their grants-in-aid posts in private educational institutions.

The Andhra Pradesh Private Recognised Aided School Management’s association has urged the government to implement the directive of high court and immediately fill 50% of various posts in aided and unaided school in the state.

Farm University to start new courses

Dec 06, 2002: Hyderabad: The Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University will introduce new graduate and post-graduate courses from the next academic year. The new courses are B.Sc (agri-business & International trade), B.Sc (food science and technology) and B.Sc commercial agriculture & horticulture). The post-graduate courses are M.Sc (veterinary & bio-technology) andM.Sc (food science and technology). The total intake for each graduate course was 40 and for the post-graduate course 10, based on restricted recruitment.

Three steps to success in CAT-2003

B.Ed counselling to end by this month

Dec 07, 2002: Hyderabad: The government will wrap up the counselling for the admission to B.Ed courses before December 31, according to AP State Council for higher education. The state government was expecting a communication from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) before granting permission to new B.Ed colleges. The government received about 150 applications from private managements to open colleges.

ICFAI thrust on spirit of entrepreneurship

Dec 07, 2002: Hyderabad: Globally there are about 2,000 incubator centres managed by corporates and Universities. During the IT boom, 300-350 more had cropped up in the US alone.

In a small way, the Hyderabad based Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) is planning to contribute to this concept by starting its own Incubator centre named ‘ICFAI centre for Entrepreneurship Development (ICED). This centre to be declared open on Saturday will provide administrative support services, human resource, computer network, lab facilities, legal expertise financial advice, business strategy and eventual plans to tie up for providing venture capital to young entrepreneurs. While initially, it will provide facilities for graduates of ICFAI programmes, later on it would be open to others also. It is planning to make a beginning with MBA students who graduate in May.

Probe into Andhra University imbroglio begins

Dec 07, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The high level committee headed by former AP Public Service Commission (APPSC) chairman and former vice-chancellor of Osmania University V.Rama krishnaiah, began its inquiry into the various issues and controversies surrounding the Andhra University imbroglio today. Speaking to ENS, Rama krishnaiah said the committee would listen to the views of all the concerned officials in three sittings. The inquiry will be very transparent and the issues raised by the students’ unions in the memorandum to the government would be probed into.

Eamcet entrance test announced

Dec 09, 2002: Nandyal: Minster for higher education N Md Farooq said the Entrance test for engineering and medical streams would be held in the last week of April next year. The minister also stated that the public exams for Intermediate first year students will be held from March 15 while for second year students, it will be from March 16 and that elaborate measures will be taken to avoid leakage of question papers. Government is planning to organise daily coaching for EMCET aspirants in 694 junior colleges across the state inorder to extend the facility to students who hailed from economically backward sections.

Government decides not to scrap Eamcet

Dec 09, 2002: Hyderabad: There were doubts over the fate of entrance tests for admission into professional colleges following the recent judgement by the Supreme Court, which allowed the management of private colleges to decide their own pattern of admission and fee structure. However, the indications from private managements suggest that they would agree to take the Eamcet examinations as a base for deciding the merit order among students. The government is now considering a mutually agreeable package for admission procedures and fee structures.

MBA exam date for BRAOU

Dec 09, 2002: Dr B R Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) will conduct MBA final year examination from 20 to 25 January 2003. The MBA final year students from the 1999 batch and students of earlier batches having backlogs are required to apply for the examination. Examination registration forms may be available at the respective study centres. Hall tickets may be collected from study centres three days prior to the commencement of the examination.

Andhra University students to continue stir

Dec 10, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The Andhra University Students Rights Protection Committee demanded that the report of the three-member high-level committee constituted by the government to probe into allegations made against the vice-chancellor, should be implemented and not to be ignored.

The committee decided to continue its protest till the authorities conceded its demands or if the committee’s report failed to favour the students. The committee is now making a new demand to postpone the examinations scheduled on December 23 in view of the national games commencing in the second week, followed by Sankranti festivals. They wanted the examinations to be held from January 20.

Colleges cautioned against long hours

Dec 10, 2002: Hyderabad: Higher education minister N Md Farooq said the department would crack the whip against erring junior colleges. Under the grab of providing orientation and coaching classes, most college management conduct classes for about 12 to 14 hours a day, Farooq said. After reviewing the colleges the higher education department felt that organising such programmes without permission from the commissioner of Intermediate education amounts to violation of rules and the colleges which hold the classes against the rule would either be punished or its registration will be cancelled.

NDA results announced

Dec 10, 2002: New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission has declared the final results of the National Defence Academy examination held by the commission in April 2002. The number of candidates in the Army, Navy, Air force and Naval Academy lists is 161.The results of medical examination have not been taken into account in preparing the lists. The candidature of all the examinees is provisional, subject to their submitting of the requisite certificates.

IIT JEE exams to be held in April

Dec 11, 2002: New Delhi: The Government has decided to make a comprehensive changes in the entrance examination of the Indian Institute of technology (IITs). The Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Rita Verma said that the screening test has been shifted from December to April to facilitate proper preparation by students appearing for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), The marks obtained by students will also be conveyed to bring about transparency in IIT-JEE. This will be effective from JEE-2003, she said.

Liberalise recognition norms,say Church Colleges

Dec 11, 2002: Hyderabad: The All India Association for Christian Higher Education, which controls 300 church-related colleges in India feels the State Government should be liberal in issuing minority certificates to professional colleges run by genuine minority institutions, particularly those which have established a name for themselves in the education field over the years. “The present system of issuing recognition certificates for one or two years is illogical and established colleges with good credentials should be recognised for longer periods”, feels Mani Jacob, secretary General, All India Council for Christian Educational institutions.

Scholarship tests for IT enabled jobs

Dec 11, 2002: Hyderabad: The Hero Mindmine Group of Industries would conduct a scholarship test for the students seeking jobs in the IT-Enabled Services. The company would also provide bank loan for needy students. The test would be conducted in two phases and selected candidates would be given scholarships to the tune of 75% of the programme fee. There will be 100% placement assistance through campus interviews.

Changes in M.Sc entrance sought

Dec 12, 2002: Students pursuing Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Micro Biology at graduate level are demanding restructuring of M.Sc entrance test conducted by OU as they were losing out to the B.Sc (BZC) students who have more options. Students feel as they are specialised courses, the University should either make Biotechnology, Biochemistry and micro –biology mandatory at the qualifying examination to pursue them at PG level or have separate entrance test for these courses rather than clubbing them with Chemistry, Physics and life sciences in the M.Sc entrance test.

No weightage for Inter marks in Eamcet-2003

Dec 12, 2002: Hyderabad: There will be no weightage for Intermediate marks in Eamcet (Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Common Entrance Test) for the next academic year-2003. The State Government, which is seized with changing the admission norms of minority educational institutions in the wake of the Supreme Court judgement, has deferred the move to give weightage to the Intermediate marks.

Time-table for Inter examinations

Dec 12, 2002: Hyderabad: The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has announced the time-table for the first and second year intermediate public examination, March 2003. The first year examination will begin on March 15 and the second year Intermediate examination will begin from March 17. The dates would be applicable for vocational Intermediate examinations also. However a separate time-table for vocational courses will be released.

Call for revamp of agricultural education

Dec 13, 2002: Hyderabad: The three day convention of the Indian agricultural Universities association concluded with a call for revamp and reorientation of agriculture education and research. Various committees participated in a valedictory function and came to the conclusion that the association would strive for strengthening agricultural universities to serve the farming community.

College staff plan agitation

Dec 13, 2002: Hyderabad: Over 18000 lecturers, Principals, Physical directors and Librarians working in various government and aided junior colleges in the state will go on strike on December 18. A decision to this effect was taken following the failure of five- hour long talks between Federation of college teachers association and Officials of higher education department, including the finance department and the other government departments. The decision to go on strike assumes significance, as it will bring the entire academic activity in government junior colleges to ahalt.

Online payment gateway for hotels to be launched

Dec 13, 2002: ResAvenue.com, a comprehensive payment gateway solution targeted at the global hospitality industry will be launched by Avenues India Pvt Ltd, a Mumbai based e-transactions company in February next year. The online hotel reservation software, ResAvenue, will enable properties to accept instant real-time reservations. It is billed as a highly cost effective solution.

B.Com graduates to take B.Ed test

Dec 14, 2002: Hyderabad: The three-member committee, set up by the government to look into the controversial issue of not allowing B.Com graduates to write B.Ed entrance examination, has categorically stated that students should be allowed to appear for the entrance examination. The committee said, “The components in B.com are also relevant to school education and there is no point in not allowing the commerce graduates to take the entrance”.

Christian educational institutions for more transparency

Hyderabad: Christian educational institutions have decided to redefine their code of conduct by introducing more transparency in their functioning and by isolating managements misusing the minority status. The state government has constituted a committee to formulate the fee structure and seat allotment practices in minority educational institutions in the wake of the recent Supreme Court verdict.

OU to create inter-university studies centre

Dec 14, 2002: Hyderabad: Osmania University plans to carve out an Inter-University centre for International studies from the existing Indo-American centre for international studies. The Osmania University Vice-Chancellor Prof Anantaswamy during his address at the four-day International Congress on French and Francophone studies said that CIEFL would have a lot to contribute for the upcoming centre. The centre would facilitate serious research in the fields of arts, languages and social sciences.

State Govt urged to implement Education Act-1982

Dec 14, 2002: Hyderabad: The non-teaching staff federation of AP affiliated private engineering colleges today appealed to the state government to strictly implement the AP Education Act-1982 so as to make professional education affordable to the poor and ensure job security to the teaching staff and non-teaching staff working in private engineering colleges.

Speaking to the mediapersons C Bhagat Simha, Secretary general of the federation, pointed out that the governments of Kerala and Karnataka had permitted private engineering colleges to fill 50% of the seats under the management quota. It also empowered the private colleges to take decisions with regard to fee structure and appointment of staff. Bhagat Simha feared that if AP emulated Karnataka and Kerala, professional education would go beyond the reach of the poor and middle-class people.

Universities go for latest courses

Dec 14, 2002: Hyderabad: Technical education minister N Anjaneyulu called upon Universities to teach latest courses for making the state a model in imparting technical education. Speaking at the valedictory of a five-day workshop on ‘Advances on microprocessors’, he said faculty and facilities should be upgraded as per the changing courses and technology in universities for effective teaching. The faculty should be trained in these courses for producing students with high skills, he said.

Admissions for PG Diploma

Dec 15, 2002: Admissions for PG Diploma in Management information systems and computer applications offered by the Bankatlal Badruka College of information technology are on for the academic year 2002-03. Graduates who had qualified in ICET-2002 were eligible for the direct admissions. The last date for admissions is December 23.

ICFAI launches online facility

Dec 15, 2002: The Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India has announced the launch of its online facility for master card and Visa credit cardholders. This facility will enable students from any part of the world to register for distance education programmes like CFA and MBA among others. Interested candidates can visit www.icfai.org and register for any programme online.

Minority colleges to frame their own guidelines

Dec 15, 2002: Hyderabad: In a move that is bound to raise eyebrows, the planning co-ordination and Monitoring Board (PCMB) for minorities, formed by minority colleges, has decided to conduct its “own entrance test for professional and other courses, similar to one held by the government and the universities”. The PCMB said it would make admissions strictly in order of merit from among the applicants in a transparent manner to the fullest satisfaction of the minority community.

Panel gets complaints against AU vice-chancellor

Dec 16, 2002: Hyderabad: The fact-finding committee constituted to inquire into the charges against Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Y C Simhadri has received complaints of victimisation from students and other members of the University. The committee also received complaints on the style of functioning of some senior University official. Since the past few months, Simhadri has been embroiled in a confrontation with students on various issues. With the matter becoming serious the government, in November, appointed a fact-finding committee to look into the matter. After the examination, the executive council will discuss the report and the vice-chancellor will be given an opportunity to explain his viewpoint.

New grading method for technical institutions

Dec 17, 2002: Hyderabad: The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) will switch over to a new grading method to assess the standards of technical institutions in the country. The board presently follows a three-tier accreditation system for evaluation process. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) adviser P N Razdan said the NBA would take several parameters like academic programmes and infrastructure into consideration for awarding grades for institutions. Highlighting the present scenario, Prof C Subba Rao said that the teachers and students had to play a vital role in making their institution as a centre of excellence.

OU to honour forein students

Dec 17, 2002: Hyderabad: Osmania University will institute gold, silver and bronze medals for the best international students from next academic year. This was announced by the Osmania University vice-chancellor T Ananthaswamy at “At home” hosted by him to celebrate International Students Day. He also announced that the university would take necessary steps to provide accommodation to foreign students studying at Osmania University. He further says, “Osmania University is the Oxford University of the East. We have a large number of students opting for the university because of the quality Education it offers and its friendly atmosphere”.

B.Ed admissions from December 30th

Dec 18, 2002: Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh State council for Higher Education (APSCHE) on Tuesday decided to commence admissions for Bachelor of Education course from December 30 onwards. The schedule of dates and notifications for the admission process would be announced shortly.

OU to offer PG courses in GIS

Dec 18, 2002: Hyderabad: The Osmania University will soon start a one-year post-graduate diploma course in geographic information systems (GIS), university vice-chancellor Anantha Swamy said. Speaking at a seminar on Geographic Information Systems, he said GIS has become very valuable in the discovery of resources and the growth of Economy. It was due to advances made in GIS and its wide applications in the Gulf countries have become rich.

BIE directive to junior colleges

Dec 19, 2002: Hyderabad: The Regional Inspection Officer of the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has asked all the principals of Government, aided, unaided, cooperative and social welfare junior colleges of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts to collect the first year Intermediate nominal rolls for checking and return them before December 20 after verification and also to collect new model question paper pattern of science subject for the first year course.

Job-oriented course at OU

Dec 19, 2002: Hyderabad: University College of Engineering, Osmania University, will conduct a 14-week job-oriented course ‘Small industries management programme’ from next January.

The course is sponsored by Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). Graduates in B.Sc., B.Com, BA, BCA and other technical diploma holders are eligible for the course.

Workshop to expose students to the new trends in technology

Dec 19, 2002: The Bhoj Reddy Engineering College for Women organised a two-day workshop on DSP Architecture and Embedded Systems aimed at exposing students to the new trends in the technology. The JNTU vice-chancellor, Y.Venkatrami Reddy, inaugurated the workshop. He spoke on usage of technology in conducting examinations and briefed students on the newly introduced Electronic Distribution of examination papers introduced by JNTU.

Nod for technical education improvement plan

Dec 20, 2002: New Delhi: The Union Cabinet’s Committee on Economic Affairs today cleared a special programme to improve the quality of technical education in the country so that it become more effective in responding to the economic and technological developments both at the national and international levels. The programme would be implemented with the support of the International Development Agency. During the first phase, the programme would provide support to about 80 competitively selected Engineering institutions.

28 Engineering students held

Dec 21, 2002: Warangal: The police took engineering students of the National Institute of Technology into custody following fierce clashes between two groups. A minor scuffle between two students at the auditorium during the cultural programmes led to clashes. The police had to intervene into the matter and arrest 28 students.

Weekend classes of OU started up

Dec 21, 2002: The weekend classes of M.Com course of the centre of distance education, Osmania University, would be conducted at the centre on all Sundays and second Saturdays starting from December 22. Candidates who have paid fee of Rs 500 for the classes are only eligible to attend these contact classes.

OU floats proposal for international hostel

Dec 23, 2002: Hyderabad: To attract more foreign students, Osmania University is opening an exclusive hostel for international students. A proposal in this regard was submitted to the UGC committee, which visited the University recently. The University Foreign Relation Office (UFRO) has submitted the proposal seeking financial assistance of Rs 3.63 crores for constructing an international students hostel for boys to accommodate 200 students and an International Transit house with a provision of 50 girl students coming from foreign countries.

Three-Month course in software

Dec 23, 2002: Hyderabad: A three-month certificate course in automation (Telugu software) will be conducted by Kamputer Aksharabhyasa Kendram, Andhra Mahila Sabha Campus, from January 1. The course content includes PageMaker, Photoshop and Coreldraw/Illustrator, web designing and Internet technology. The last date for registration for these courses is December 30.

University-college nexus alleged

Dec 23, 2002: Hyderabad:Ridiculous as it may sound, the NTR University of Health Sciences is seriously considering revival of an MD course in homeopathy through distance education mode. The move is allegedly aimed at benefiting the promoters of private homeopathy PG colleges. Under the proposal, the course will be offered by the respective colleges through distance education unlike other educational programmes which are offered by the university directly. The “unofficial” fee structure for the distance education programme comes close to Rs 3 lakh per candidate for two years when compared to 6,000 through a regular course at government colleges where it is a three year stint.

AMIE coaching for students appearing for section 'A' and'B'

Dec 24, 2002: Hyderabad: The Institution of Engineers will conduct evening coaching classes on a no profit, no loss basis for the candidates appearing in the section “A” and section “B” of AMIE examinations in the summer session of 2003. The classes will commence from December 26.

P.V. for improved teaching quality

Dec 24, 2002:

Hyderabad: Stating that a massive backlog of educational infrastructure had been overcome and conditions created for a drive to enhance quality of teaching, former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, argued that enough credit is given to what has been achieved. He accepted that much was left undone and said that the challenge today is to find out ways in which quality can be uniformly enhanced and to stop the flow of knowledge and talent from our country to foreign lands.

Commencement of B.Ed admissions

Dec 26, 2002: Visakhapatnam: The clearance from the Government to commence admissions for the B.Ed course for the 2002-03 academic year was expected in a couple of days, the convener in-charge of the Education Common entrance test-2002 (EdCET) said that the admission process would be initiated before December 30. He said that the Government should pass a GO for finalising the admission schedule and to commence admissions. The results of EdCET-2002 were released on September 12 and it was decided that the admissions should be made through online system.

OU may withdraw autonomy to some campus colleges

Dec 26, 2002: Hyderabad: Osmania University is likely to do away with the autonomy given to some of the campus colleges during D.C.Reddy regime given the opposition to it and the “not so enthusiastic” attitude of the administration concerned. If the developments and opinions expressed are any indication, autonomy given to college of Arts and Social Sciences and College of Science on the Campus and the two Constituent colleges – P.G. college in Secunderabad and Saifabad are likely to be withdrawn from next year. Majority of committee members also felt that autonomy is creating more problems to them than solving them.

Private engineering colleges not adhering to norms

Dec 26, 2002:

Eluru: Engineering education in almost all private colleges in the district is not upto the specifications of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), according to a survey conducted by the district committee of the Students Federation of India. Even as the AICTE guidelines envisaged that the engineer colleges should have 25 acres of land, this norms was being grossly flouted by the management of engineering colleges. Most of the colleges were found to be not having professor despite the AICTE specified a professor, assistant professor and lecturer ratio in 1:2:4.

Directive on hall tickets to Intermediate students

Dec 27, 2002: Hyderabad: The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) said that all Intermediate failed students who appeared for second year exams in March 2002 or earlier and were not appearing for the March 2003 exams as private candidates, should apply for hall tickets. The board secretary B Kripanandam advised all students to meet their principals along with passport-sized photographs and fill in the ICR forms to get their photo hall tickets. No student will be permitted into the exam hall without the photo hall tickets.

Entrance likely for minority insitutions

Dec 27, 2002: Hyderabad: Minority educational institutions may be granted their wish to conduct independent entrance examinations for professional courses with the AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) considering this demand favourably. The minority educational institutes have informed the government that the pattern of common entrance test shall be similar to that followed by the government or the university common entrance test. The board shall prescribe the fee for each of the courses and it will not be either less or more than 25% of that prescribed by the government.

No Objection Certificate for more B.Ed colleges

Dec 27, 2002: Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala cabinet decided to give no objection certificate to start 283 self-financing B.Ed colleges in the state. The Chief Minister, A.K Anthony told that the state, however required only 75 colleges as per scientific study by an expert committee. The government would refer this report to the National Council of Technical Education (NCTE), which is to give clearance for the colleges and request it to limit sanctions to 75 colleges.

Admissions to minority colleges

Dec 28, 2002: Hyderabad: Minority professional institutions organised a meeting to frame a policy regarding admission to minority institutions in the light of the recent order from the Supreme Court. A sub-committee was constituted in the meeting to study various alternatives regarding admission for different courses such as engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and agriculture to decide by January 20, 2003.

MBA programme of the central university

Dec 28, 2002: The last date for submission of application forms for admission to MBA programme of the central university for the academic session has been extended up to January 6, 2003. Candidates who had appeared for the CAT examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) in November 2002 could obtain the application forms from the academic section of the University.

BRAOU examinations from January 2nd

Dec 30, 2002: Tirupati: Degree second year supplementary practical examinations of the Dr B R Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) would be held from January 2 to January 6. The Examination would commence daily at 9 a.m. Students from Chittoor, Nellore, Cudappah, Kurnool and Ananthapur study centres would attend the examination.

Pondy Govt decides to allot 50% seats to locals in Pvt. colleges

Dec 30, 2002: Pondicherry: The management of all institutions of higher education should allot 50 % seats to local students in private colleges, sponsored by the territorial administration. A decision to this effect was taken at a cabinet meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister N Rangasamy.

Coaching classes for SCs and STs

Dec 31, 2002: The coaching-cum-guidance centre for SC, STs will commence coaching from January 1 under the ninth phase of its special scheme. The 11-month coaching will be conducted for candidates appearing for competitive examination like Staff Selection Commission, RRB and BSRB. Candidates are also offered a monthly stipend of Rs.175.
