Online counselling for B.Ed admissions

Jan 01, 2003: Hyderabad: Admissions to B.Ed course in various colleges in the state have been delayed and the government has decided that it would hold online counselling at various centres from January 17th to February 2nd. The B.Ed admissions will be held in a manner similar to the EAMCET online counselling at various district centres. For government colleges, admissions will be on the basis of merit, while for aided minority institutions and unaided non-minority institutions 15% seats were reserved for each.

Panel to examine NCERT textbooks

Jan 01, 2003: New Delhi: A decision to examine and review the new history textbooks brought out by the National council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was taken in view of the fears expressed in various quarters about the departure from the secular approach by the NCERT in the new history texts it has brought out for classes VI, IX and XI in order to correct the errors committed by them.

Andhra University to have four new institutes

Jan 02, 2003: Visakhapatnam: In a major initiative, the academic senate of the Andhra University has given green signal to set up four new institutes in the East Campus. These are aimed to develop the emerging technologies and cater to the needs of entire state. The proposed institutes are Institute of Ayurvedic Sciences and research, Institute of applied science and new technologies, Centre for Creative and Innovative Technologies and Institute of Rural and Tribal Development and Management.

B.ED admissions policy announced

Jan 02, 2003: Hyderabad: Complying with the Supreme Court judgement relating to aided, unaided and minority institutions, the state government came out with a policy covering B.Ed admissions and grant permission for new B.Ed colleges. The policy covers only B.Ed admissions because they are yet to be initiated. Regarding admission to other professional courses, which have already been done, a permanent policy will be evolved after consultations with experts and academics.

Learner services centre at BRAOU

Jan 02, 2003: Dr. B.R Ambedkar Open University inaugurated a ‘Learner Services Centre’ in order to facilitate the students with quick, reliable, effective and efficient services. The centre comes in the wake of the university’s decision to observe 2003 as the year of ‘Learner Services’ to emphasise the importance of learner services in distance education. It also released a ‘Learners Charter’ intended to increase awareness among learners. It contains vision of the university and focuses on its responsibility.

Jan 02, 2003: Hyderabad:Osmania University on Wednesday declared the results of the BA, B.Com and B.Sc (year-wise scheme) supplementary examinations held in October. CME on emergency Medicare

Jan 03, 2003: Hyderabad: As a part of platinum jubilee celebrations of Osmania Medical College a continuing medical education programme on establishing emergency medical services in the state will be organised on January 6. The theme of emergency medical services was chosen for the CME in view of country’s poor disaster management. An organised method of management in such cases would help in reducing the death rate.

JNTU announces short-term-courses

Jan 04, 2003: The Centre for Spatial Informational Technology, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), is conducting three short-term-courses- Integrated GIS and CAD, Digital Photogrammetry and Global positioning System. The courses will start from January 8.

Speech conversion system at research centres

Jan 04, 2003: Language Technologies Research Centre of International Institute of Information Technology has developed a text to speech conversion system for Indian languages which currently supports Hindi, Telugu and other languages. BRAOU Eligibility test in February

Jan 06, 2003:

Hyderabad: The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) will issue Eligibility test application forms at all the University study centres in the state from January 7. The test would be conducted on April 13, 2003 while the last date for submitting the forms is February 19. Candidates with or without formal educational qualifications are eligible to appear for the test for admission into BA, B.Com and B.Sc courses for the academic year 2003-04. Call for doing away with subsidies of higher education

Jan 07, 2003: Banglore: Information technology icon N R Narayana Murthy, Chairman of Infosys called for doing away with subsidies for higher education. He said that it should function as an industry in a free market environment and the only function of the government must be to regulate the quality of higher education by setting standards. Further there should not be any subsidies for higher education.

Selection for PG medical seats

Jan 07, 2003: Vijayawada: Selection for the leftover Pre and Para clinical seats of Post-graduate medical courses for the year 2002-03 will be held at the office of the NTR University of Health Sciences. New test for Minority Colleges

Jan 08, 2003: Hyderabad: The newly created Planning, Coordination and Monitoring Board will hold a separate entrance test for 12 of the 32 Muslim minority engineering colleges in the state when the new academic year begins. The entrance test would be similar to Eamcet. It will be held within a week of Eamcet.

Reservation of seats for disabled students of TN

Jan 08, 2003: Chennai: Providing a huge opening to handicapped students, the Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Government to reserve for the disabled three % of the seats in all government/aided educational institutions. The reservation should cover all branches of professional education and also directed the authorities to reserve seats for them in the Medical colleges.

Tata Steel to set up Polytechnic

Jan 08, 2003: Jamshedpur: Tata Steel has decided to set up a world class polytechnic in Jamshedpur in collaboration with a well- known technical training organisation, Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF), Banglore. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Tata Steel and NTTF recently to initiate the project, to be known as R.D. Technical Education Centre.

AIEEE bound to upset Inter MPC students

Jan 09, 2003: Hyderabad: According to information BITS-Pilani has signed up as an affiliate of the All Indian Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) 2003. If BITS-Pilani takes in candidates through the entrancemode it is bound to upset the plans of students who used to get a seat there on the basis of the marks scored in Intermediate. Students in the state who used to opt for BITS-Pilani and Eamcet now find that one option has been ticked off. Though the list floated by AIEEE is a tentative one, students and parents have worked up a fine lather.

Confusion Hangs over Admissions to Warangal NIT

Jan 09, 2003: Hyderabad: Confusion prevails over the admission procedure into the recently upgraded National Institute of Technology (Formerly Regional Engineering College) in Warangal. One Version is that the admission to NIT, Warangal will be through the All India Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE). The AIEEE website has included NIT, Warangal with its tentative list of participating institutions in the AIEEE 2003 scheduled to be held on May 11. But the state is yet to receive any information in this regard. Though the quantum of seats to be filled by students of AP, which is close to 200, will remain unchanged, the students will be required to take the AIEEE test instead of Eamcet to get an admission if it is brought under the umbrella of the all India test.

Government sets conditions for minority entrance test

Jan 09, 2003: Hyderabad: The government is unlikely to allow minority educational institutions offering professional courses the permission to conduct their own entrance test on the lines of Eamcet unless such colleges agree to a common test of their own.

Twelve engineering colleges run by the Muslim minority have approved of the Minority Engineering, Medical Common Entrance Test (Memcet) proposal which is hoped to be held by the planning, coordination and monitoring board of minorities (PCBM). But unless all the minority colleges approve of Memcet, the government is unlikely to permit such separate tests.

Osmania University announces Certificate Course

Jan 09, 2003: University College of Engineering, Osmania University, will conduct a 14-week job oriented certificate course in small industry management. Graduates in any discipline, BCA and technical diploma holders are eligible for the course. There will be no entrance test and last date of submission of applications is January 18. Interviews will be conducted on January 21st.

Announcement of Common Entrance Test

Jan 10, 2003: Hyderabad: Common Entrance tests for admission into various professional courses for the academic year 2003-04 will be conducted as follows:

Eamcet will be held on April 26, Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET) on May 18, ECET (FDH) on May 4, Lawcet (both for the three year and five year course) on May 26, and EDCET on June 15, according to the AP State Council of Higher Education Secretary, Prof V Jayaram Reddy.

Aptitude test for budding doctors

Jan 10, 2003: Hyderabad; The NTR University of Health Sciences has recommended the government to introduce an aptitude test for the students who want to pursue a carrier in Medicine. In addition to academic merit, other qualities such as aptitude and personality of the students should also be taken into consideration as per the recommendations made by the University. It also recommended that a common entrance test be introduced on all-India basis. Introduction of such common test on all-India basis will ensure that minimum standards were maintained while admitting students to medical colleges.

Announcement of B.Ed admission schedule

Jan 11, 2003: Hyderabad: The commissioner and Director of school education, Manmohan Singh has released the following admission schedule for the Minority B.Ed colleges for 2002-03. Sale of application is from January 6th, last date for receipt of forms is January 16, publication of the first list is on January 21st and admission closes on January 30. Applications can be collected from respective colleges or DEO offices.

Entrance schedule announced

Jan 11, 2003: Hyderabad: Schedule of the common entrance test for the admission into various professional courses in 2003-04 was announced today. More than 6 lakhs candidates are expected to appear for the various combined entrance tests (CETs), as according to the officials of AP State Council of Higher Education. The Eamcet 2003 will be held on April 26 and about 2 lakh students will appear for the test. The integrated combined entrance test for MBA and MCA courses, Icet-2003 will be held on may 18 and the three-year and five-year law courses, Lawcet-2003 will be conducted on May 26.

OU has extended the date for payment of examination fee

Jan 11, 2003: Hyderabad: The last date for payment of examination fee and submission of forms for candidates of M.A., M.Com., M.Sc. and MSW courses in affiliated and district PG Colleges of Osmania University is January 30th and last date including late fee of RS.100 is February 7th. The University has also extended the last date of payment of examination fee for regular candidates of B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc courses to January 20th.

AISF opposes move on 'free seats'

Jan 12, 2003: Hyderabad: The AISF has asked the government to give up its plan to convert free seats in private engineering colleges into payment ones. The federation’s state general secretary, B. Eswaraiah, sought the government to evolve the contemplated new admission system for professional courses without affecting the interests of reservation category as per the Supreme Court judgement. He said if free seats were made payment ones, it would be the candidates from poorer sections who would suffer most.

Minority students are worried about their admissions

Jan 12, 2003: Hyderabad: The various modes of admission being thought by the minority Engineering colleges this year in the light of the of the Supreme Court judgement in causing heart burn among minority students, who say they would be the ultimate losers The minority colleges argue that the Supreme Court has given the right to have their own admission procedures and they are doing nothing against the rules. A group of institutions stated that they would have a Common Entrance Test (CET) for 12 colleges under its fold while other minority institutions are still silent over their mode of admission creating confusion among students.

Virtual university for engineering centres planned

Jan 15, 2003: Chennai: The Union Human Resources Development Ministry is all set to release nearly Rs.19 crores for a project, which will use Modern Technologies to improve teacher capabilities and learning systems in engineering educational institutions. The money will be channelled into Virtual Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning (VCTEL) for producing educational content pertaining to about 100 courses in the first phase. This content in digital form can be made available for teachers handling B.E/ B.Tech courses in engineering colleges.

Kakatiya University B.Ed counselling from Jan.17

Jan 16, 2003: Warangal: Counselling for admissions into private and Government B.Ed colleges in Warangal, Adilabad and Karimnagar districts under the Kakatiya University would be held from January 17th to February 2nd according to EDCET-2002 regional coordinator Ramanath Kishan. He said the counselling would be held at the Warangal Government Polytechnic College. No separate intimations were sent to the candidates and the counselling would be held as per the schedule announced earlier.

NIIT pact with Indonesian university

Jan 17, 2003: Hyderabad: NIIT has tied-up with the University of Atma Jaya in Indonesia to set up a High tech computer education centre at the Yogyakarta Campus of the varsity. Under the tie-up, NIIT will provide informational technology training through its state-of-the-art centre located at the faculty of industrial technology of the University Atma Jaya. This is second alliance for NIIT in Indonesia, the first being an ongoing tie-up the faculty of engineering of the University of Indonesia. The alliance offers NIITs benchmarked quality training to the Indonesian youth based on its technology curriculum, “Futurz” that incorporates the latest computing technologies.

Students cry foul as minority colleges run shortly

Jan 17, 2003: Hyderabad: Utter confusion, exploitation and flouting of rules marked the submission of applications for admission into minority colleges on Thursday, the last day for their filling. Students and their parents had a harrowing time obtaining the application forms and submitting them in time. With application forms, particularly those of Muslim minority colleges, in short supply, acquiring them became a Herculean task. There were reports of students going from one district to another in search of forms. To check the irregularities in the minority institutions and to bring in a measure of transparency, this time round the government had insisted on making the application forms available both in the colleges and at the concerned DEO offices.

New B.Ed colleges unlikely to start functioning in 2003

Jan 18, 2003: Hyderabad: With the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) seeking fresh clarifications from the managements starting colleges, it is unlikely that new B.Ed colleges start functioning this academic year. With the state government closing the B.Ed admission process, which began on Friday, by Jan. 28, the new management are sceptical about being allowed to run the colleges this year. The state government had cleared the applications of about 204 new colleges and sent it for the NCTE regional centre in Banglore for approval. The fresh list of demands has put the entire process in jeopardy.

NIT admissions through AIEEE

Jan 18, 2003: Hyderabad: Putting an end to the confusion among the students about the entrance test to be taken for admissions to the newly upgraded National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal the technical education officials clarified that the students were required to take the All India Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and not Eamcet. Though the admission was through the AIEEE, the number of seats to be filled by students from AP, which was close to 200 and would remain unchanged. The last date for sale of information bulletin at designated branches of Syndicate Bank and regional offices of the CBSE and receipt of filled in applications is February 1st.

Technical education channel to go on air

Jan 18, 2003: New Delhi: An exclusive TV channel for technical education will go on the air from Republic day to benefit nearly 1.5 million students in 1,200 colleges across the country.

The free-to-air digital channel will be launched as part of ‘Gyan Darshan’ by the human resource and development ministry. Starting with 16 hours of daily transmission, it would eventually air programmes around the clock. Infrastructure at Indra Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) would be used for uplinking this channel. The focus of the channel would be curriculum-based programmes for undergraduate studies in engineering and technology. While it would be coordinated by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, all IITs would participate in this venture.

Action against B.Ed colleges flouting test norms

Jan 20, 2003: Hyderabad: The government will take action against minority institutions which conducted a second entrance test for admitting students into B.Ed colleges, according to minister for school education M Venkateswar Rao. Talking to reporters here on Sunday, he said the government had information that some minority institutions held the second admission test other than the ED-CET 2002.He further added that these institutes cannot conduct the second entrance examination invoking the Supreme Court order.

CM promises to help for sanction of new B.Ed colleges

Jan 20, 2003: Hyderabad: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has assured the Association of New B.Ed College Managements that he would be sending School Education Secretary, I V Subba Rao to Delhi to pursue the matter relating to sanction of new B.Ed colleges with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). As many as 204 colleges were given the no objection certificate in December 2001 after the managements had applied for starting new B.Ed Colleges in 63 Mandals as per Government’s notification. The NCTE inspected the proposed colleges last year. It is expected that the new B.Ed College would be sanctioned before the counselling schedule begins.

IT set to get a place in revamped medical education

Jan 20, 2003: Visakhapatnam: The State Government is planning to revamp the medical education sector to revamp through introduction of Information technology in classrooms. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had asked authorities to impart medical education through daily video conferences, two hours each in the morning and evening, to students of all Private and Government medical colleges.

50% reservation in pvt medical colleges not valid

Jan 21, 2003: Kochi: A division bench of Kerala High Court today held that reservation of 50% seats in self-financing private medical colleges in the state, by the government was not valid. The bench comprising Chief Justice J L Gupta and justice M Ramchandran, held that the reservation should be restricted to 25% of seats. They observed that the fees structure as laid down in the government order of December 19 last year was illegal and contrary to regulations framed by the Government and Supreme Court directions. The court held that the petitioner should be entitled to charge fees at the rate of Rs. 1.5 lakh per student as an interim measure till a decision was taken by the committee constituted under the regulations.

B.Ed colleges to be finalised on Jan 28th

Jan 21, 2003: Hyderabad: The National Council for Teacher Education will finalise the list of new B.Ed colleges for the state. School education secretary I V Subba Rao met NCTE Chairman Prof Maheshwari to get the permission for over 200 new colleges. He pleaded with her strongly to clear the applications during the current academic year. The government has dispatched Subba Rao to New Delhi in the wake of reports that a powerful lobby of colleges in Karnataka was blocking the sanction of new colleges for the state. The NCTE promised to look into the matter, provided all applicants furnish complete information.

Wakf Board's medical college plan to fructify soon

Jan 21, 2003: Hyderabad: The ambitious plan of Andhra Pradesh state Wakf Board to set up three medical colleges in three regions of the State is expected to take shape soon with the first coming up in Visakhapatnam next year. The other colleges will be set up in Hyderabad and Kurnool later. A proposal was made to set up the colleges with student intake of 150 each. The Andhra Pradesh State Wakf Board will become the first institution in the country to start up a medical college. Of the estimated Rs. 40 crore required for setting up each college, the board will invest upto Rs.10 crore and the rest will be mobilised through other sources.

Establishment of nine science institutes from global alliance

Jan 22, 2003: New Delhi: Nine leading Science and technology institutions from countries including India and US came together to establish a Global Research Alliance (GRA) with the objective of creating a global knowledge pool for solving various problems, with funding from all over the world. The alliance encompassing nearly 50,000 scientists would focus on international research to solve problems facing in the world. The alliance will facilitate R&D cooperation to address problems especially in the area of water, health, energy, transportation and the digital divide.

High Court order on engineering colleges

Jan 22, 2003: Hyderabad: Justice E Dharma Rao of the High Court on Tuesday, while vacating an earlier order, directed the government to consider applications pending before it for starting new engineering colleges in the state. The judge was dealing with a batch of writ petitions filed by the managements of various societies wanting to start new engineering colleges. Earlier, at the instance of the parents of students who were pursuing engineering courses, a single judge had directed the authorities not to sanction permission to new colleges pending a survey in this regard.

JNTU to create quesion bank for online exam

Jan 22, 2003: Hyderabad: The online examination system introduced by the Jawaharlal Technological University (JNTU) will soon be modified and a ‘moderated question bank’ was created.

The move came in the wake of complaints that there was a lack of uniformity in the standard of question papers for each subject. The earlier system of sending the question papers through online to examination centre half an hour before the commencement of a test failed to satisfy the needs of both students and management, as the question papers were not standard. Responding to this JNTU in charge for evaluation, Prof Srinivasulu said the system was full-proof as the question papers would be sent through the web site in an encrypted form half an hour before the commencement of examination and to prevent any further complaints even the evaluation process would be moderated.

Admission module for colleges mooted

Jan 23, 2003: Tumkur: The Karnataka Government has asked the managements of private professional institutions to accept the CET or face the wrath of the people. The officials who participated in the inauguration of two buildings and laying of foundations for six others at the Sri Siddhartha institute of technology urged the managements to make compromises for ensuring social equity and providing justice to poor and meritorious students. The management were told not to stand on prestige on the issue. The curriculum was also revised for every batch. The pattern of education was reoriented, with stress on the economic needs.

New guidelines soon for vocational courses

Jan 23, 2003: Hyderabad: The government was evolving new guidelines for giving accreditation to vocational courses and institutions, according to Prof. DK Vaid, programme Coordinator at Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education, Bhopal. The institute is a wing of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The guidelines were intended to give a trust to evaluating student’s competence through continuous assessment and standardisation of vocational educational syllabi and for short-term skill-based certificate courses to cater to diversified needs. The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) had designed as many as 63 courses, which would be started from the next academic, with the duration ranging from tree months to one year for SSC students on the subjects of Agriculture, Engineering and Technology, Computer Sciences, Business and Commerce, Home Sciences and Humanities.

TN Govt. firming up engineering admission policy

Jan 23, 2003: Chennai: The managements of self-financing engineering colleges in the state are meeting on Sunday to finalise their strategy for admissions to B.E/B.Tech in the next academic year. According to the present indications, the government will make public its policy announcement on professional college admissions in early February.

The biggest group which is worried over the latest developments are families of thousands of students who want to enter engineering courses. They fear that the benefits of the SWS, which in the past six years has helped lakhs of students all over the country join B.E/B.Tech, without hassles, are now being taken away. A consequences emerging among managements is that thay could continue to participate in the SWS so that all stake holders in engineering education are benefited.

OU announced last date for BA examination fee

Jan 24, 2003: The last date for the payment of examination fee and submission of forms for the candidates belonging to BA and B.Com streams, who failed under Open University system from the G Ram Reddy Centre for Distance Education, is January 31. But a late fee of Rs. 100 will be added to the admission and examination fee.

Pvt engineering colleges offer 20% seats to CET

Jan 24, 2003: Bangalore: Private engineering colleges offered to part with 20% of their seats for allotment to the meritorious and the poor through the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell. The Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, B.Ed and TCH colleges, will come out with a scheme, indicating the fees they required and the %age of seats they can give, by January 31. This was announced by Higher Education Minister G Parameshwar, after he held individual meetings with the representatives of the managements of Engineering, Medical, Dental and Educational Colleges. At the meeting colleges were unanimous in their demand for a fee hike.

Vocational studies need of the hour

Jan 24, 2003: Hyderabad: A multi-layer approach to vocational education and development was the need of the hour, said eminent educationist, R H Dave. While addressing at the “National Meeting on Performance Evaluation and Competency Certification for Vocational Courses” he stressed on a curriculum which is based on vocational studies. Dave said that the current academic system needs reforms, which can help students in their carrier.

CIEFEL to offer new courses

Jan 25, 2003: Hyderabad. The CIEFEL’s Centre for French and Franco-Phone Studies is offering the level 1.l Course for beginners. The course will be of 100-hour duration and it will be conducted 4 times a week. SFI to conduct Model Eamcet

Jan 25, 2003: The Students Federation of India (SFI) would conduct a model Eamcet on February 9th. The results of which would be put on Internet within five days after the test and the top ten rankers would be awarded gold medals. Interested candidates can register their names at their nearest centres.

World Cup fever distracting the students

Jan 25, 2003: Hyderabad: The World cup fever has gripped SSC and Intermediate students in the twin cities with 87% of the latter saying they would watch the telecast even if examinations are round the corner. In a survey conducted by the Management and Marketing Research Consultants, among a sample of students appearing for SSC, ICSE and CBSE about 61% of them and 41% of Intermediate students would prefer to watch matches even if they have the exams.Students give their first priority to World Cup rather than their examinations.

Exclusive technical education channel launched

Jan 27, 2003: New Delhi: In a major boost to distance education in the country, students will now have access to high quality tutorials in engineering and technical courses in the comfort of their homes through a dedicated technical education channel and four FM radio channel. Aimed at reaching nearly four lakh students of technology of 1200 engineering colleges, the TV channel, to be known as ‘Ekalavya’ and coordinated by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, would relay eight courses in a series to be telecast on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These channels would enable all those students who could not make it to IIT’s to get guidance from the Institute’s tutors.

Plea to withdraw fee hike for engineering students

Jan 27, 2003: Hyderabad: Alarmed over the recommendations of the Cabinet sub-committee on abolition of free seats in professional courses and effecting a steep fee hike for engineering students, various students union urged the government to withdraw such a move as it would deprive the poor for higher education. The unions expressed concern that the recommendations of the cabinet sub-committee constituted to go through the fee structure and admission procedure would only help to commercialise education.

Student's death triggers protests in Warangal

Jan 27, 2003: Warangal: Tension prevailed in the town yesterday after a senior Intermediate student electrocuted at Vidyabharthi College. Students staged a sit-in in large numbers near the college demanding immediate action against the management. Till now it’s not clear how he received the shock. He died on the way to the hospital. As the news spread, students poured into the streets and held up the traffic for about five hours. The protest continued till evening and the efforts made by the police to end the impasse proved futile. Warangal MLA Baswaraju Saraiah intervened and demanded the district collector to cancel the permission given to the college management to run the college.

BIE to accept fee under Tatkal

Jan 28, 2003: Hyderabad: The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) is allowing the students to pay fee for public examination under Tatkal scheme from February 10th to 15th. The student should submit application along with nominal roll attested by the principal of college in BIE office and a fee of Rs. 1,000 should be paid. Applications received through post are not been accepted.

Medha Patkar urges students to fight against globalisation

Jan 28, 2003: Kozhikode: The Narmada Bachao Andolan leader, Medha Patkar, has exhorted students to fight the crass corporatisation and commercialisation of the education sector. Inaugurating the maiden students parliament of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), she urged the students to come out against the new education policies based on liberalisation and globalisation. Even the hike in the fee structure of the universities was done at the behest of the multinational giants. The so-called innovative projects were actually designed to suit the needs of the corporate bodies and international agencies. After all these years the much-hyped District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) did not produce any positive results.

Training academy's distinction

Jan 28, 2003: Hyderabad: Personalities Academy, a private interactive training resource announced that it has won the contract to download its “soft skill training courses” at 73 post-graduate colleges affiliated to the Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education. The colleges cover all six universities of the State. The project was executed within six weeks despite the large logistical Government in the area of soft-skill training. According to C. Subba Rao Chairman of APSCHE “Soft-skills sell hard skills and if our students are trained in soft skills, they would be able to convince others about their technical abilities and sell their ideas in a much better way”.

55% in Inter may be must for Eamcet

Jan 29, 2003: Hyderabad: The government is planning to prescribe a minimum of 55% in Intermediate course as the qualifying mark for admission into professional courses, particularly in medical and engineering streams. This is likely to come into effect from the next academic year. The government is also planning to fix 15% as management quota in private colleges and also plans to have a uniform fee structure in non-government professional colleges.

Applications invited for starting new junior colleges

Jan 29, 2003: Hyderabad: Applications are invited from the registered educational societies/trusts in the State for academic year, 2003-04, for sanction of new vocational junior colleges, new vocational courses in the existing colleges and conventional junior colleges and additional sections in the existing colleges.

High Court notice to minority B.Ed colleges

Jan 29, 2003: Hyderabad: C.Y. Somayajulu, Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, admitted a writ petition complaining that the authorities were not taking any action to prevent the two Muslim minority B.Ed colleges (Anwarul-Uloom college and Khader Memorial college) from conducting private entrance test in a hurried manner prejudicial to the interest of the poor students from the community. Both the colleges gave advertisements asking the students to appear for private entrance examination conducted by them within the 48 hours.

karnataka to continue with CET

Jan 29, 2003: Shimoga: The Minister for Higher Education, G. Parameshwar, reiterated the government decision to continue with the CET (Common Entrance Test) system for admission to professional courses. The government had held two rounds of discussions with management of private professional colleges to convince them to part with 50% of seats to the government while retaining the remaining seats with them.

Fee structure finalised for engineering seats

Jan 30, 2003: Hyderabad: The government has finalised the fee structure for seats in engineering colleges. A student will have to pay Rs 18,000 for a seat in private engineering college, Rs 8,000 in the University colleges and Rs 60,000 for a management quota seat. The government has fixed the fee structure considering the affordability of the student community and a viability of the college. The university colleges could increase their intake by 15% under the supernumerary quota. The government has also decided to increase the management quota in MBA and MCA colleges from 5% to 10%. The fee for both has been reduced and is fixed at Rs 60,000.

Principals to meet on BIE exams

Jan 30, 2003: Hyderabad: Principals of all junior colleges in Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Ranga Reddy zones are to attend a meeting on conduct of intermediate examination. Regional Inspection Officer, Board of Intermediate Education, P Ramakrishna Reddy, said instructions would be given to principals in the conduct of theory and practical examinations besides handling over practical award lists, practical centre nominal rolls, college-wise practical batches besides hall tickets and practical answer books.

Russian University to open office in the city

Jan 30, 2003: Hyderabad: The Kursk State Technical University (KSTU), which comes under Russia’s ministry of education, is in the process of establishing its office in the city. The office will act as a nodal point for guiding and processing the applications of students desirous of seeking admission to KSTU. The university has more than 8,000 students. It is offering different courses in various branches of engineering, besides humanities, leading to bachelor’s and master’s degree.

New courses at JNTU from February

Jan 31, 2003: Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Centre for Spatial Information Technology at Masab Tank has announced three short-term courses from February 1st. The courses include the four-week part-time integrated GIS and CAD, three-week programme in Digital Photogrammetry and two week Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The GIS course will cover the state-of -art techniques of geographical informational system (GIS), Arcview, Autocad drafting and 3D Modelling. The digital photogrammetry course will cover the fundamentals of photogrammetry, aerial triangulation stereo draw and digital terrain modules.

No new B.Ed colleges

Jan 31, 2003: Hyderabad: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the apex body empowered to grant permission for new Bachelor of Education of (B.Ed) colleges, is likely to clear the pending applications during the current academic year. Due to the decision taken by NCTE chairman Maheshwari, the student community will be losing about 20,000 seats. He has deferred his decision on sanctioning permission for new colleges in the state to February 6th. The applications of about 195 prospective colleges, each with about 200 seats are pending with the NCTE.

Payment seats in university engineering colleges

Jan 31, 2003: Hyderabad: For the first time, the university engineering colleges in the State are going to be permitted to offer seats against payment of fee to NRI students or resident Indian students who can afford the price. A coveted seat in these colleges would be available for US$6,000 or its equivalent in rupees. However, the university colleges will offer these seats under the newly created 15% supernumerary quota on the regular intake.
