Biotechnology courses attracts college students

Aug 02, 2004: The latest fad to strike the college students is Biotechnology. After the sweep of information technology, interior designing and fashion designing, comes the wave of biotechnology. A close study reveals that it has become a hot flavour and attracting hordes of students into its net. End result being only a few seats are vacant in the colleges, where it is offered and such colleges are few in number. The main factor being it remains a high-cost investment and found to be a expensive venture.

One of the colleges, CMR College of Engineering and Technology offers the said facility and it is said to possess excellent facilities to conduct such a course. Also, it offers superb hands-on experience in a innovative environment that jerks the creative spirit within the students to pop out and exhibit their range of talents. India seems to be in the throes of a biotech boom and as such needs ample amount of talent to pitchfork it into the league of elite nations that shall shape the framework of the biotechnology revolution in the 21st century.

It will be indeed a sight to watch young and aspiring talents showcasing their manifold talents in the biotech labs and provide a new direction to the nation’s future as a biotech giant in the coming years

College dress rules undergoes a change

Aug 11, 2004: College dress codes in the city seems to be taking two turns, uptight in some colleges and relaxed in others. Sounds puzzling, but that’s the way the boat seems to be sailing. One of the classic case seems to be the prestigious prima donna St Francis Degree College for Women and the other relates to St Mary’s Centenary Junior College.

The exuberant and lively girls of St Francis Degree College feel relieved at the relaxation of dress code rules. The fresh change discloses that the girls are allowed to raise their kurta hemlines a little higher, the same helping them to ease and walk down the road at a comfortable pace without any pain or gain. However, the relaxation has not satisfied some females as they complain that they have already got long kurtas stitched and another round to the malls and tailors would only drill a hole in their loose money pockets and make their heads shake like a Nescafe Shake. ‘Oh! No …’ seems to be their war cry and ‘Oh! Yes ....’ seems to be the response of the tailors. The other rule that still seems to nag the females is ‘No Jeans…’ , ‘Bah! ..’ that’s going too far seems to be their saying, at least there are asked not to tell ‘Baa Baa Black sheep, have you any wool…’For the St Francis girls, the dress is strictly Indian and no mod hep Western wear allowed.

The other college, St Mary’s Centenary Junior College has gone to the extreme rigid. Boys in the college are not allowed to show off their funky character in the shape of colourful T-shirts depicting whacky slogans, gaudy designer wear and so on. Phew! That’s a bit too harsh, guys are mopping tears by the bucketful as they cannot reveal their macho stuff and instead stay tuned with imposed dress norm, that is, simple and tidy that makes them look too shareef ( ‘Honest’ in English) and ultra-disciplined.

The battle is raging, fuse lit by a dozen and mood getting sullen by the second. Sometimes strict dress codes does not work, it only emboldens them to showcase their frustrations in outrageous appearance’s after college hours. Bah! That’s too much.
